Geez, constructions good hard work.. but its good money. But i just got back from an unofficial lockout (meaning i am jsut helping the person i'm not a cert. locksmtih) any way my lil sistersrs friend, her parents locked them selves out it was no biggie just a quickset knob and dead bolt keyed alike, they called me, i came and opened the door- i fiddeled a little saying wow this locks pretty good.... i didnt want to ruin there sence of security anyway i opened both and sprayed the locked with some lube like always, they offered me 50$ for doing this, i didnt take it because there friends plus it was another good on job expience, but i have been called out to peoples house's about 15 times this month so far and i am not even a locksmith. yet... i was offered money each time i denied it, some say its stupid, but i just wanted the expiernce time, I mean even though forensic entry investigation is my goal, being a lcokout on call till then seems like a good side job. Anybody else in this position? I just thought it was funny that i went to a local lockie saying he didnt need any help because lockouts are scarce and he said quote " Locksmiths are not indemand anywhere any more", well apparently that is wrong, i hope my foley course gets here soon, before i accept money i want to be certified. Oh and just to finish the thread, i always suggest that if they feel uncomfortable with me being able to open there lock i would provide them information on locks that are more secure. I figured this would be an honest thing to do. FUnny though even though it takes me a minute sometimes, people say ehh no its okay this one works i will get a new one when it breaks.. fine by me, just means when i am certified i can make a buck on an easy lockout call. :D

I can agree with you on this one for more than a few points. I also am rather interested in becoming a phorensics specialist also and think that lockpicking has a great general use for lockouts. However, I also agree with your local locksmith; we're not needed as much as say a surgeon of a firefighter. Locksmiths, although rare, can be a good asset to a small community, especially if they are known well.

And really, locksmiths can make good cash depending on where you live. :D So I'd say it's a fine side job, esp. for family and friends.
Loneliness is one of my few virtues.

" Locksmiths are not indemand anywhere any more" the reason is because there is someone out there doing the work for free

ya got paid!

Postby raimundo » 4 Jun 2006 9:25

When people ask me to open their locks, they never offer to pay, except a beer or a yogurt cup or something. but about doing lock outs, follow up on automotive locks, and then leave business cards at the supermarket and other places where you will find urgent and desparate needs when the keys are locked in. phorensiks? forensics? is there really a job there, do ya work for an insurance co or something? Like forensics on burglaries that are worth enough to actually get investigated? most burglaries they just take a report and tell the person they'll never see their stuff again. but if ya mean forensics like CSI, the olfactory annoyance would keep me out of it. I could dust up some fingyprints I suppose. Maybe you could be a consultant, going around and telling people that all security has flaws and can never be perfect and getting paid for saying it.

There are jobs in forensics.
German police has a standard procedure that demands of every burglary investigation to check the lock extensively.
Several other countries only do it on important cases.

To the guy who works for free.My septic tank is backed up would you like to clean it out with a straw for free. Thanks in advance. Locksmiths invest a lot of money and hundreds of hours practicing their trade.Next time someone is locked out give them the number of their local locksmith.

Ray yes the job for the FBI exsits, i called the field office in Phili before i started college and was instructed on what classes to take to best get the job.. its not like that gay show CSI, and its FBI work, meaning your only going after something big or serious, not someone who busts a lock for a couple cartons of ciggerettes.. that seems to be a trend where i live, my buddy who sells me my smokes every morining is getting rather pissed.

I'm with you ray.. it would be very easy for me to start a huge HUGE flame war which would ultimatly lock the thread for an immature reason... but i have not the time, lol and just a little non flaming thing.. if you have a bad septic tank.. don't eat at taco bell anymore and please like you said P-man call a professonal. :D Sorry i got your panties in a ruffle.. but i am a good person and i help people. As does ray with his pick making and finishing advice and many other people, your post count is low and saying things like this will deminish your credibility as a good person in here, no hard feelings though.

It does feel great to help people even save them a buck, soon i will be done with my folley course can't wait!

Later guys, Andy

hey p team, cool off man, just because a guy knows how to get open a lock and does it for his friends isn't going to create any mass move of locksmiths loosing thier jobs, i think you should vacation to the arctic "brrr" :D
nothing is imposible, you just have to try hard enough to do it

Artic sounds great, besides the cold ice fishing is great (another one of my past times) but like i said no hard feelings perhaps he maybe thought i had a buiness that i did what other lockies do for free, but i really just help people that need imediate help.. plus my little sisters friend who i help when her parents locked her out.. i dont think she had a spare 50$ plus milages to pay the lockie, i thought i was fair i even offer to her parents if they felt uncomfortable that i did pick the lock for thre daughter to get in i would suggest locks for them that are very secure and a local lockie a few miles away that could help them.
