I started with a mini might and several sets of depth keys and expanded my key machine inventory as good deals came along. That mini minght is now converted to a 12 volt machine and I added a micrometer to the guide to make it more versatile. I now have several machines that are considered much better than the mini but I just like it and I have continued to use it . 17 years out of a key machine that was purchased at a yard sale for $17.00 not bad eh?

Start by useing depth keys with a duplicator then move up to a code cutter like Code Max, Framon, ITL ect. Key punch machines are convinient but require different carriges for each different type of key that is cut, this can add expence.

BPC - try www.princessauto.com - I was walking around in the Ottawa, Ontario location and they had key machines in the aisle - sorta blew me away, they were fairly inexpensive, not sure of quality of the beast though. You may be able to get them to ship it to the States, though the US$ is not that high right now - maybe wait.

Wow I just posted a reply to this but it did not show up, Ok here it is again.

BPC - sorry about that, I looked for it also and could not see it either. I was sorta surprised when I saw it in the aisle at the store. You may be right about the in store item.

Alot of items at Princess Auto are not sold in every store. In one store I found 1000 credit card writers, but when I went to another store, (with the UPC) they said they never carried them, (at that store) and were sold out.

Alot of their stuff is clearance/ surplus items, hence the great pricing.

Just a slight tip here,

None of us are paid to help anyone and we all post on this site, run this site, visit this site for fun and to help others, on a broad question such as you asked you really can not expect a full answer in a few hours/less than 24 hours, it will be more like a few days, be patient and wait, posting things like 'is no-one going to help me then' for example does nothing but get peoples backs up.

I admit you wasnt that bad on this thread but thought i would just mention it incase you thought no-body cares.

You could just start with the fb machine and some depth keys or for less than a couple of hundred bucks they have a digital attachment that will allow you to cut by code. They also sell a motor that will allow you to plug the fb machine into your cigarette lighter socket.
