when i learned to pick locks i would get excited about it and show people.
now i have a few people asking me to show them. they are friends and i dont think they would do wrong but i am not 100% sure. should i just tell them where to buy a book and if they realy show interest and make an effort then show them. you guys just dont show all your friends how to pick if they just ask do you. i no theres no straight answer i am just looking for other peoples opinions.

Well, the important thing is your judge of character. These are apparently your "friends". Do you know your friends well? Are they friends who would backstab you given the opportunity? Would they take a $10 bill that you leave sitting on the table if you weren't around? Would they use lockpicking for bad purposes?
Personally I can say that all of my friends wouldn't do those sorts of things. But I dont' show them for the sake of showing them...I let them come to me, and if they exhibit an interest in lockpicking for the sake of fun, and I know that they're a decent person, sure. But if you have doubts about someone's integrity, then you have to ask first why they're your friend, and second why you'd teach them lockpicking.

I used to work in a high security, highly monitored area - I know I can be trusted with picking locks, but some of my friends (associates rather) cannot. One individual who is constantly asking me is the kind of guy who works for an electrical supplier who removes things from pre-inventory lists when they come from the manufactering plants so that he can stock his own truck.
I've sent a few people here for the forum, suggested internet url's but none want to visit as they think that they will be under big brothers watchful eye. Scary.

Perhaps this site IS monitored, but I guess all the better since we have nothing to hide.
If Big Brother truly wishes (or even exists for that matter) to watch you, then likely you're already being watched. Got to love George Orwell.

The guys I used to work with, some of whom are my friends still were Orwellians - the most paranoid dudes around. This was mainly due to the official motto of the shop as well as the venue I worked at "Only the Paranoid Survive" - The only place not monitored by Cameras was the shop (which is now monitored due to some goof stealing stuff) and the Washrooms.
I don't care if I am being watched, I am a virtuous person I guess - never stolen anything in my life, got into lockpicking because I watched too many spy movies when I was a child I guess. LOL

I would suggest going with your gut feeling. If your gut tells you to be cautious then do so.
I would also concur with the rest. If this person is someone you wouldn't trust to teach lockpicking to, why do you consider them your friend? My friends I would trust with my life if necessary, so teaching them picking were they interested would be somewhat trivial.
*insert witty comment here*

I concur with the above statements.
The way I began this fine hobby was reading and researching. Anybody who truly wants to do this for pleasures sake will or should have the time to do the same.
I find that most people learn best if they find their own technique.
And of course ask this person why they want to learn.
If all else fails, tell them 'its against the rules of the Ancient Order of the Lock', and when they look at you weird say 'I've said too much already'
Cheers
Trevor

A good way to *test* those acquaintances you're not really sure about is to intentionally leave that $10.00 bill laying out around them and leave the room for a few minutes several times.
I've tested several people in this way and discovered several friends who I would not hesitate to leave in my house alone with thousands of dollars, and I discovered others who have never been back to my house.

assume the site is survieled, NSA and all the other three and four letters are now doing "social network datamining" so just give em something to think about.
