Master Lock has a number different model padlocks, each with their own level of difficulty or unique features. I don't have a list on hand, but I'm sure someone could/has post(ed) what they know about each model of Master Padlock.

I would recommend that your next purchase be a Shlage deadbolt or two. I personally feel that padlocks are a less-than-ideal way to practice while you're still new at this.

Once you've got the Schalge down, look to getting ahold of some security pins to introduce to it. That will be your next challenge.

If you have trouble finding security pins, PM me and I'll let you know where they can be obtained.

Hope that helps,

db

That is indeed a good question, and yes this site is crazy insane for posts some days. I think db mentioned to me the other day something about over a 100 posts/day...

Anyways, if you check out the locksport forum and have a look at the pin tumbler test kit thread, you'll see something of an idea of how some rank lock types. 8)

A lock such as db suggested that has a moderately restrictive keyway that is also rekeyable is an excellent second step into increasing your skills and allowing for a multi-level practice lock.

If a padlock is something you want to mess with you could go to Wal-Mart and buy one of the 5 pin brass Mountain Security locks. Those are a little harder than the 4 pin Masters, but not nearly as hard as a lock with security pins. I believe my Mountain Security padlock was well worth the $3.65 for a practice lock. Make sure you get the brass variety and not the laminated kind. I got the largest one with a standard shackle length.

Varjeal somewhow failed to mention that he sells kits. Get a fancy pin kit and a lock of your choice here:
http://www.varjeal.com/pins.htm
The Schlage keyway is available.
(If you're in Europe shipping probably isn't practical, though.)

brass mountain also makes a 5 pin deadbolt lock with 2 spool pins for about $10. took me a while to get spool pins down, finally was able to get it open consistantly today.

Varjeal would never advertise his own site on LP101. But yes, he does have those kits. They're pretty nice.

As Ali G would say- RESPEK to Varjeal - really though thats a great thing. I used to attend a hobby group where it was nothing more than a weekly sales pitch by one or more of the hosts.
