No not every time you hit the key and depending on the quality of the lock and key you could now just be damageing either.

Have a read around the threads on making bump keys on here to get more details.

bump

Postby raimundo » 2 Jun 2006 10:47

I used to slap the bumpkeys around with table ware, large spoons and butterknives held by the blade, your one time in four is way better than I could do. then I got this block of white plastic on a flexy strip of handle, that you just flick at the bump key, this changed things a lot. my old bumpkeys had a lot of metal on metal spalling on the striking surface, this doesn't happen at all any more, there is something about the quality of the strike, you know like if your riding a bicycle, and you come to some really bumpy place, you stand on the pedal with knees flexed, and a very loose grip on the handles, its better by far and safer than sitting down and holding the handles tight. How to describe the reason for this is something I don't know the vocabulary for. I tried a superball on a cord, but that didn't work on the bump keys, you just need to try a variety of light hammers that only need to strike hard enough to seat the key in the lock quickly, heavy hitting is not the way to go. use some wood or something.
