I'm dense and can't pop the cylinder out of this Kwikset

So, I'm a noob in case it isn't obvious, and I've spent a few hours off and on (other things going on) trying to disassemble this Kwikset lock I just picked up. I'm lost and could use some help.

It's your average $10 Kwikset door lock (not a deadbolt) and I've gotten as far as getting the spindle out by following these directions (<--- Kwikset's guide). However, I'm stuck on the next step (or series of steps) which is using the cylinder removal tool (which I don't have) to release the cylinder.

Here's what it looks like right now and what I've tried:
Image

1 and 2 are the ends of the spring, and using pliars, I've managed to lock them open but that doesn't seem to do anything. I've tried this based on a thread or two I've found here as well as some googling on the subject.

3, when pressed in (downward in the picture -- it's the more silver part of the lock (which I'm sure is obvious to you fine folks)) pops 4 and 5 out further, locking around the posts. This, however, doesn't seem to pop the cylinder out, either.

At this point, I tried playing with the spring ends as well as pushing that "clip" in all while jiggling and gently turning the key.

So far as I can tell, the Kwikset guide is instructing you to lodge the removal key in the little hole that's somewhat visible in the half round cylinder, and then like a lever use the removal tool to force that clip (#3) open. I can do this with a screwdriver, but I don't seem to get anywhere.

So, would someone tell me where I'm going wrong? I feel silly resorting to this in spite of the massive resources availble, but I'm just not understanding what's being presented in other guides and threads apparently, or else I'd have this taken apart by now.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can lend. I've wanted to learn to pick for a long time now, and this is my first step to learning what in the world I'm doing. :D

your 1&2 points are irrelevant (this is the spring for knob return)

and so is three( the locking pate )

put the stem back into the lock the same way you removed it.

insert the keys and rotate them left and right

see how the stem rotates in sync with the turnng of the keys?

this is how the knob actualy locks and unlocks.the stem actuates that plate that drops down around the screw post stopping roatation of the knob and therebye locking it.
spinning the keys clockwise will retract the plate allowing the knob to turn and this is unlock.

remove the stem again.

look down into the back of the lock and see 2 spring steel squares staring right back at you. these are the ends of the spring clips that retain the plug assy.

you can see one in that pic you posted above your point 3
stick something down there and probe it

both of them will have to be bent towards the center to release the plug.
the kwikset tool makes this easy
harder is using 2 small screwdrivers
or a bicycle spoke or 2

Yeah, I was able to see this much, at least. Was kind of neat as I'd never looked at a lock that closely before.

I actually saw the one you can see in the picture, but I didn't see the other until just a moment ago as I looked again. Interesting. I can see how this'll be a bit of a pain without having that specific tool. Perhaps I can find a screwdriver large enough to hit both. Otherwise, it may be a long night of fighting with a couple of screwdrivers.

Thanks much for pointing me in the right direction. Hope to update this with good news later. :)

Quick update: the cylinder is out, but trying to get the plug retainer off is resulting in little more than me bloodying myself up. What a pain. I get one side of the ring up and the tension it places on the other side is too much and inevitably my itty bitty screwdriver attacks me.

Time for a break.

(For the old timers: Kevin, is that you? :P )

Just kidding.... Here's a helpful bit of info. A set of circlip pliers are very, very handy. :)

Thanks again for the tips and links (it's amazing how you can miss certain threads despite several searches).

I took a couple of days away from disassembling this dumb thing (work, car, etc.) and when I went back to it tonight, everything seemed to clicked. That stupid clip securing the plug pushes right off (here I was trying to twist it off and yank each side off); the pins came pouring out, and I'm working on that lovely beginner's excercise as I try to learn this unique craft. It's a shame the pins came jumping out (at least the top and bottom didn't come out all at once) as the key is now pretty useless. I figure it'll be fun to attempt to re-pin the lock to the original key (right now that seems daunting, but I imagine I'll figure it out eventually).

Anyhow, my thanks again.

(And no, not Kevin if my ignorance is not blindingly obvious ;) ).
