File Cabinet Can't open it

Postby BELLE8 » 13 Jun 2006 12:40

I purchased a file cabinet second hand, and while moving it, the buttion was pushed in to lock it. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on to get the lock open ? Appreciate all the help.

Did you get it yet? :)

Sorry, not sure if I should respond or not. Do you have a photo of it, what make is it. Don't have the keys I'm guessing.

Do you need it to lock again? - otherwise I would say drill it out - I have taken all the locks out of the filing cabinets I own (and the ones I dont that are at work, no need for them there either :) - got directors permission to do so before I did this).
- There is no spool -

It is a Fenco file cabinet. It has horizonal drawers and it is an older model. I do have a picture but not sure how to attach it. I really do not need to lock it again (would be nice but I do not see that happening) I tried to go to a lock company to get a key and they were not really nice about it.

Go to another.. i really doubt they would turn down buisness.. honestly if you dont need to lock it again jsut drill it out, or go to another not arrogant place and ask for a key odds are they will ask you to bring it in, in this case just call a lockie out it will save the trouble... if this isn;t appealing just drill it out.

Take down all the info on the lock itself, if the manufacture and code number is on the lock you can get a key cut by a locksmith. If the lock only has a code number on it there is a chance that the code is used by several manufacture's and the locksmith will need to see the lock to identify the key required..

Did you make sure it is well lubed? Those cheap cabinet locks aren't the smoothest of all locks and they aren't spring loaded either. The most usual problem with those locks are that they aren't well lubricated.

you may be able to put a stiff wire right through the plug and just drag down on the spring loaded bolt behind it.

Those filing cabinet locks are almost plug grinding cylinder. There is no need for the tension wrench after you turn the plug because it is so rough. The friction will usually hold the tension.
