I trying to practice on a door lock. (only lock I can break and not care) This is the first time I've tried to pick a lock outside of a suitcase padlock. I'm using two very thin flathead screwdrivers. (one for pick and one for torque) The best I've done is three pins. (counting the clicks when I release torque) The big problem is the back two pins. They will only go up when I'm not applying torque and won't stay up when I lower the pin. I tried using a safty pin but it bends to easy. Any suggestions?

Yup. Getting or making a set of real picks would be a great start. It's true that you can pick locks with a lot of makeshift stuff, but it's a miserable way to try and learn.

If your rear two pins are not binding, it's 'cause they're not "ready" to. You have something else going on, and my guess is that it's either an overset pin or an underset pin. My money's on overset.

But really... you should have better tools to learn with. I promise that will help. After that, look for the "beginner lockpicking exercise" at the top of the PickFu section of this site.

That'll make a big difference too.

Good luck, and happy picking!

P.S. Sorry I took so long to respond. :P

Thanks, I've been looking at the picks in the budk magazine for a while I've just never had a good reason to buy them. I think I get the beginner set.
