Wiper Blades.

Postby pradselost » 16 Jun 2006 3:51

Yeah, windshield wiper blades are extremely easy to remove. You might want to bring a pair of little pliers or such to snap off the plastic retainer piece and make it even a bit easier for yourself though.

hpc293, if you have been messing around with engines and such you will have absolutely no problems removing the blade inserts. As said, some pliers might be handy to initially peel off a piece of wiper silicon/rubber, then you will clearly see the two inserts and can remove them. No big deal.

Don't forget to butcher some locks from the vehicles... :)

Tranny sticks may be thicker and wider but it of course varies on vehicle model and make.

Wiper inserts, pull the rubber off the blade holder, slip out the metal strips as said some long nose pliers or side cutters make it easier.

You will find 2 types, a wide one and narrow one, grab any you can find as you may like to make the odd pick out of the wider ones

Leatherman/Gerber--always have one on you. I always carry a little mini-Leatherman in my pocket, very useful, and I don't have to wear the belt clip as it's designed to be small enough to carry in a pocket.

semi-off topic but
i'm a bigfan of the gerber, i prefer it over the leatherman cause you can open/engage the pliers one handed...

dam$it raimundo, that's the one brand I was trying to think of that I forgot to add to my poll on multitools I just put up--schrade. My dad's got one, I knew it started with an 's' and reminded me of 'schlage' but I just couldn't think of it, sorry 'bout that.

I found the easiest tool is just a pair of diagonal cutters. Don't bother trying to undo the retainer. The piece under the retainer is notched, so it's not really a useable piece anyway. Snip the insert just below the retainer, use the diagonals to slip the insert out. Should take you less than 30 seconds to remove both inserts from a blade.

The metal is the same, like shrub said it depends on the make and model.

As for actually using them I'd say they are too flimsy to use but if you were to try what I would suggest is using the oil one because most of the time the tranny stick is much thinner and not as strong.
