Got metal working skills and tools --Cash 4 U.

This may fly like the proverbial lead balloon but here goes...

Are you able to make quality lock tools?
Do you maybe have access to metal lathe and/or milling machine?

Fellow lockpick101 members, who may lack the technical skills to make tools and gadgets, need your help.

Maybe they simply do not have access to the more advanced metal lathe or milling machines.

I personally can handle pick tools with a minimal risk of injury....... I never had any experiance using power tools and there is a signifacant issue of safety.

Would you be willing to craft picks, tension tools, cutaway locks, bumpkeys, or anything else our members dream up, YOU could earn some CASH, while helping the less technically inclined.

Please post some contact information.

Ultimately, I would love to see a sticky consisting of a directory of people willing to use their metal working skills and/or tools to make custom tools for members.

Payment would include cost of materials and perhaps compensation for time and effort.

I tried this before, the idea being people can request cutaway locks they want done, even set it up so you have to provide the lock you want a cutaway of done to the person doing the cutaway. Nope! No one wanted anything to do with it, and all I wanted was a plain 6-pin Sargent done as a cutaway! :x

Plenty of people who wanted cutaways done liked the idea, but no one who did cutaways did :?

I'd be willing to do cutaways of certain locks.

The problem is that most people are not going to be willing to accept the loss of a lock due to a mistake or problem. I have had several locks slip in the milling vise while milling. They are junk at that point. It is a fine line of not tightening them enough or over tightening them and marring the lock all over or possibly getting parts of them out of round.

Just last weekend I was working on a medeco biaxial cutaway for db that I had intended to finish a long time ago. Evidently I had bumped the mag based dial indicator at some point and ended up cutting too deep on his lock so it's now junk. That is the kind of stuff that can happen and most people are not going to be as accommodating of mistakes as he was.

The only advice I could offer is don't use brand new-priced locks.

I would suggest putting a wanted ad in the buy sell trade forums. That way someone can PM you if they want to take it on. If I saw a wanted add for some lathe work within my skill level, I would be willing to give it a shot for a reasonable amount of money.

Well (*&& (*&( &&()**!!!! I asked about this two months ago and everyone tells me to bugger off. Geeezzz... :P :P

Well, the reason I wanted that at the time was because I didn't really have a place set up where I could do any kind of dremeling or anything else that might be a bit messy, as my workbench with my pick stuff was pretty much in the middle of the living room next to the couch; reason being my old apartment got flooded because of Katrina and since we had to move I hadn't really gotten around to setting up a workshop area in this new apartment. Thankfully, it does have a spare room we weren't using which I have since recently converted to my workshop, but anyway.

Ok, I'll think about it and see if I've got anything anyone wants to take a crack at...Say, would anyone be interested in doing a cutaway of a lever padlock? I've got an Era 5 lever padlock, that could be quite interesting if it were done right so you could see everything working. It's the cheapest of my lever locks, between it and a Chubb 114, Chubb Battleship, and a Squire 6 lever LSV. I'm sure as heck not going to let you chop up the Chubb Battleship, but the Era wouldn't be a big deal....

Go to that yahoo locksports group and look at the photos section, look a bob goldings abloy classic decoder, it should be easy to make one, the one I made of stainless tube and bike spoke is still being tweaked. other designs from the past, made with such material as umbrella strut are still unfinished and lost.

I have enough tools and skills to do some cutaways, and perhaps some tools.

What locks would people like to see as a cutaway?

Well, I would like to see an EVVA MCS. To make that properly would however involve making / moulding? some transparent plastics parts - those that hold the magnetic rotors, and maybe the sidebars as well. Otherwise one can't see the beauty of these locks properly :)

Most locks can be seen cutaway on the manufacturers websites, its the fact people want them in their own hands thats the differance, after messing around with a (£110) $200 lock for a week you wouldnt want to sell it off too quickly i assure you.

Offering My skills

Postby Wolfman » 22 Jun 2006 21:41

I'm willing to produce stainless steel picks with plastic handels. I make them from knives. Fine quality. Smooth finish. Available in halfdiamond, small hook, large hook, single and dubble ball, and rakes. Tention wrenches made from windshield wiper inserts when in stock, or hacksaw blades available in single twist and no twist.

I started making these as kinda a hobby within my hobby and whould be happy to supply some basic sets. Great sets to give to your n00b friends.

If I get enuff interest I would be more then happy to get some picture and prices for you guys.

I gave all my homemade picks to my friend who is interested in lockpicking. I Have to go buy some more stock (knives from dollar general)

Will post as soon as I make some more.

I am more interested in making cut aways then grinding picks. Never made a cutaway yet. Any guides on making them? If i get good i wouldent mind selling some cutaways...
