where can I get picks?

Postby gcon » 19 Jun 2006 7:44

Before you all yell at me for not reading the first few posts in the first forum, (which I did), just hear me out. I live in upstate New York and I was hoping I could get a set of picks somewhere other than the internet. I was thinking of calling a locksmith and asking where i might get a set of lockpicks, but I'm not sure if I'll seem like a thief, and I know you guys won't judge me :P. Any help will be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Hmm I could be way way off here but i think in New York owning lockpicks is ilegal so i doubt a lockie would help you.

Hmm... Gte friendly with the locksmith you are planning on getting help from... ask him if you can have a play with some of his old stuff he'd normaly throw away and let him know you just like playing with locks. Once you've got him convinced slip in the fact that you'd like to learn to pick, he'll likely help you, and if you seem overjoyed, and the guy is cool, he might give ya some cylinders to play with.

Meh.. if he thinks you're a thief, then too bad. He'll have forgotten your face within a few days, as most people do now.

Get friendly, show you're interested, mention picking, and ask if he'd order some picks.

It's a gradual process, but if you just waltz in and demand it I'm pretty sure he'll send you off with nothing. Were I a locksmith, and somebody came to me eager to learn I'd be more than happy to order them some picks once they showed me how dedicated they were. :)

I thought it was only those jackknife picks?

If picks in general are illegal, then you're out of luck.

Wow! I didn't really expect this site to be so active, I'm very impressed. Thanks for the help guys. I might call a locksmith and ask them about the legality of lockpick ownership in New York and were I could get them, if it is legal. Thanks for the prompt replies.

anyone will send picks to new york state. new york city is diffrent they have diffrent laws and codes and everything. its like there not part of the rest of the state. nyc its illegal to have them the rest of the state is ok but theres that gray area of the law. are they burglery tools or not. if you are searched for some reason that has nothing to do with trespassing or breaking and intering. they will keep them. but you wont get charged.
