Lockpick selling online...

Postby !*AMP*! » 24 Jun 2006 10:20

I recently did an order at an online lockpicking retailer, and realized that they actually check to see if the card holder buying their items are over 18. I am almost eighteen, and figured they probably wouldn't even check....but guess they proved me wrong. Are there any US laws about lockpick selling online? Because I couldn't even find lockpicks on Ebay...

Anyways, worked out using someone elses CC and paying them cash...so kinda dumb having that under 18 thing...:)

Rules are rules and laws are laws, ebay dont allow the sale of lockpicking equipment officially and quite right but their ethics on such things are differant behind closed doors, they are happy to allow the sale of anything you want, porn, guns, lockpicks, shrunken heads etc as long as no-one tells them about it, they make money from each sale so there happy, if you tell them about it they may remove the item if they can be bothered.

There is no way to identify the age of a credit card holder. In fact, credit card processing is typically a means of identifying if an individual is 18 years or older. Very very few people under the age of 18 have a credit card, as most require you to be 18 years or older to begin with (in the States). I am surprised your order was some how denied.

There is apparently a federal law on the books which prohibits the mailing of lockpicks and other implements of burglary through the US Postal Service. Third party carriers are fine, but nobody enforces this law. This is according to an article on security.org.

I don't know if they can tell your age from a credit card or not. I've had one since before I was 18, so that doesn't really tell them anything.

Racoon you may want to check your facts.

This is from Security.org

" Section 18 USC 1716A Makes it a crime to send any materials defined in 39 USC 3002(a) through the mail or interstate commerce by common carrier such as Federal Express or UPS."

It seems this may apply to third party carriers.

The denial came through the issuer of the card, not the lock pick dealer. So somehow the CC issuer sees whether or not the order states whether you have to be 18 or not...I think...

Oh, and they ship through USPS...so...who knows...

That old stuff about verifying that someone is 18 by whether or not they have a credit card is silly; it might have worked 20 years ago but any business still using that is misinformed. It's very easy to get a 'card' of some kind that will be accepted AS a credit card anywhere that you do not have to be 18 to get, specifically debit cards and prepaid credit cards. You don't have to be a certain age to set up a bank account and if you've got a few bucks you could just do that and have them issue you a debit card--that's how I did it when I was 14; got a checking account and a Visa debit card, and bought all kinds of crap I wasn't supposed to have  . I was able to do this because most places then, not as many now but still a lot, did figure if you had a 'credit' card (they can't tell if it's credit, debit, or prepaid when they run/charge it) you were at least 18.

I ordered absinthe, whiskey, and cuban cigars online from Europe when I was 16 or so using this method

Well, considering that fact that you are almost 18, you could just wait. Or, you could make some picks yourself if you have access to hacksaw blades, a grinder and/or demel tool.
