As almost everyone here is about to tell you ( ) There is far more to locksmithing then just picking. It is one of about 20* faucets of locksmithing. You need many traits/skills to be a good locksmith. People skills, mechanicly inclined, drivers license would be helpfull, understanding of electical stuff would be good, carpentry is a MUST (yes, even finish carpentry), safecracking, ect.... Tons of stuff. So if your thinking of becoming a locksmith just because you can pick locks, you better take a look at the proffesion as a WHOLE.

As much as Foley-belsaw and other courses want you to think it does, its not too too great. There are many more jobs that pay much better. I think its safe to say that most lockies do it for the love of locksmithing, not because it pays too well. If you start your own shop most of your money will be invested in capitol.

If you ever want to own your own lockshop or anything like that I would suggest going to colledge and taking bussness courses. Doesent have to be a big fancy colledge, maybee comunity. Just go to colledge out of highschool. Most people who tell themselves that they will go back latter, dont go back, ever. (yes, yes, there are exceptions...)

 Just my 2 cents (American, so its worth more than canadian)

Of course you could specialize in openings and lockouts, but unless you live in an area where lockouts are frequent (high pop. area) it won't be enough. Plus you will still need a basic understanding of lock servicing in case something goes wrong on a lock out.

Heh, I've gotten that call from quite a few friends over the last few years, they know I can pick, and they also know I carry handcuffs at work.

Funny thing though, mostly its the female counterpart calling saying he's locked up, and I can't find the key..."

The most interesting one was handcuffed to a bicycle. And no, I did not ask why.
