Darkapple,
Have a look on ebay, find somthing you can afford and then have a search around here to see if its what you need,
Other than that strip your lock down and re-key it by following Illusions re-pinning guide, this will give you a differant combo of pins to try, put a short one next to a long one and try that.

Have you opened more then one 5-pin lock? 5-pin locks from more then one company? Before you move on to security pins make sure you just havent memorized the pin hights in the lock you own.
and... Yes, spool pins would be a good chalenge if you have gotten good at 5-pin lock

Your better forgetting such things and either make a decent set following the guides on here or just buy a simple first set,
Paper clips are best left to hold bits of paper together, it can be done but a noob will struggle and someone that has picks and can ick may do it but only for a laugh to see if they can.

Saying you want to learn, and saying you want to use household items are direct opposites of one another in this context… At the very least go to lockpicks.com and buy a short hook ( http://lockpicks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=241) and a torque wrench ( http://lockpicks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=239). Those two tools are cheap, yet will open many locks. And if you use the coupon code lp101, you will get 10% off.
As far as guides go, search for the MIT guide, and check out Matt Blaze’s site ( http://www.crypto.com/papers/notes/picking/).
And in the future, learn to search this site, pretty much anything a noob will ask is already here.
