why isnt there a sticky on bumping? i think someone in the know of bumping should write a guide with pictures in it. that way, someone like me, who has never really tried bumping, who understands the basic idea behind it, but doesnt know what/how to actually do it can learn how without having to make a "how do i bump?" thread and look like an idiot.
thanks!

The topic of bump keys is one only recently disclosed to the open forums. The subject is still a little taboo, and I think an easy end-all guide would be sending the wrong message to our visitors.

but something to get us started would be appreciated. I'm in the same boat as Krypos, I know the basics of why it works and roughly how to go at it, but I wouldn't bet anything on actually getting something unlocked.

i personally think that visitors should only be allowed to view topic names, not actual posts. this would encourage alot more visitors to register.
as for bump keys, i can't fully comment because im not shure of what they actually are. I think LP101 is respected enough not to be known as a criminal portal for web users.
i think an end-all guide would be a great idea. or atleast a sticky on the topic.

hmm... so it used to be advanced? hmmm. anywho, i just want to learn more about it without having to ask someone, but since its come to it.
HOW DO I LEARN TO BUMP?! i know i ahve to make a key that is in the 999 position, where all the peaks are high/low or something like that, and then after that i ahve to put the key in the lock apply a tension on the key, tehn strike it with an object, eg screwdriver, haribrush, anythying really.
then what?!
how do i make theta 999 key? how much tension on the key? when and where to strike? different keyways?
what now?

The idea behind a bumpkey is to allow the unskilled the ability to break into any lock.
This is a forum about the skill of lock picking. Not breaking and entering.

Its been said that electric picks and snapguns can cause damage to a lock; and even to an extent manual picks can damage locks - but is that destructive entry??? If you want to be technicle then yes it is but LP101 users arent criminals and are just interested in locks and lockpicking.
If bump keys come under that then so be it.
When people ask "how do i get into a locked house" then lets start to get suspicious.
I stand by my previous posts.

The issue has nothing to do with damage caused to the lock. It has to do with the skill necessary to open the lock. A bump key can be used by a 12yo with 5 minutes of training and zero interest in the sport of picking locks.
We are here to further the sport of lock picking. We are not here to teach people how to "open locks" by any other means.

Because these items are historic relics of lock picking, and the forum aids people in the hobby of constructing such devices by hand. I think that forum's sub-title speaks for itself. "Tool recommendations, information on your favorite automatic and/or mechanical lockpicking devices for those with less skills, or looking to make their own." The bump-key, however, is effortless in all respects. One might as well wave a magic wand and chant "OPEN SESAME!". We do not readily condone such witchcraft. The only reason it’s talked about at all is because our friends at TOOOL decided to make it public.

Bumping is not picking and as such must be considered as a bypass, epg's and manual guns do require skill to operate,
There is a guide and a very good one, zeke made it and if you have a search for it you will find it,
I havent checked but maybe db's thread on usefull links includes a bumping link,

Here is my original DIY bumpkey paper. It is still being hosted by plot at this link http://www.brainwashed.us/lp101/files/d ... ressed.pdf .
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

i think a search of 'bumpkey' would help you find many threads on it.making ur own bump key isn't as easy as it looks. If the spacing is off it will not work. Therefore, just because a key fits into a certain lock does not mean a newbie can make a bump key out of it. (unlress they get lucky) I suggest you learn the concept of bumping and then go buy a key and lock.. use that key to make the bump key so u don't have to figure out the spacing. Not much fun in learning how to bump... takes relatively no skill once you have the right tools.. Though if you're trying to learn how to bump for illegal reasons.. then hopefully you get caught doing it and get arrested by the cops =)
