Lots of locks

Postby unbreakable » 21 Jul 2006 17:47

Hey all,

I was just offered some Corbins, Yales, Russwins, Sargents, Schlages, Ilcos and tubelites, for $.75 each. They are all either mortise or rim, and they are keyless. The seller has ~100 of them.

Now, for the questions.
1. -How hard are Corbins and Russwins to pick?

2.-What are tubelites? Are they just a pin tumbler? I can't find any info on them. How hard are they to pick?

3.- With regards to the Ilco's, are these just like any other pin tumbler? I know Ilco for their push button locks, but not mortise or rim cylinder locks.

4.- Which of these brands would you guys recommend buying?

Thanks,
Unbreakable

1. Corbin and Russwin locks are a medium security pin tumbler, and are comparable to sargents. You may get an Emhart in the batch too, and those are high security.

2. Tubelites? Never heard of it, so the seller probably has the wrong name.

3.Yes, Ilcos are pin-tumblers, nothing real fancy.

4.Tubelites, just to see what they are. Sargents and Corbin are what I would buy.

There are guys running locksport groups that would just about fall over for a deal like that. I'd say buy as many as your budget will allow. Worst case scenario, you have a bunch of locks. Best case scenario, you have a bunch of locks. Hard to see where the losing proposition is there. :)

I have or had some Tubelite locks in my lot of Y1 cylinders up for sale. It is no different than any of the others.

Corbin and Russwin locks have security pins at times, some are medium security and some are real easy. If you get lucky, you may get one with a master keying ring. I got a Corbin with a master keying ring off my school locksmith, and I've only picked it once. It has 6 pins and mushroom drivers, and there is no way to feel what sheer line you have picked a pin to. There is no reliable way to consistently pick them unless you've had a lot of practice with one particular lock and memorized it's traits. But I've also got some locks with master rings that pick to one sheer line real easy, so it's hit or miss. They function very similarly to SFIC's, however both sheer lines are operation.

Some Yale and Sargent locks would be good to get too.

I actually found my Tubelite in my lock collection. It has a similar keyway to that of a Yale Y1, but the top of the keyway shoots up a bit more (and a Y1 key does not fit).

I haven't tried picking it yet, but I might pull it apart to see if it has any security features.

Other than this one lock I have, I don’t know anything about them.
