Trouble bumping schlage...

Postby spectre » 14 Sep 2006 2:50

I've recently found out about bumping, and my picks may have to sit out for a while... Anyways, I have a locksmith made bumpkey and even though I've managed after trying for hours messing around using different techniques ect, managed to get my garage door deadbolt open. But, for the deadbolt on my front door. Thats a whole different story, when I insert my bumpkey, even though there is space for the shoulder to be inserted farther, and enough of the tip is filed off the key wont budge. :?: It's a bit stff and requires force sometimes to get any key in the somewhat old, worn deadbolt, so could this be the problem somehow? Any tips would be appreciated, as this is very puzzling.

Most people on this board aren't going to recommend that you practice bumping your front door open. There's a good chance you'll damage your lock. I wouldn't pick or bump any lock that was in use unless for emergency purposes, practice on some spares.

I guess I should have explained myself more clearly. My "front" door isn't exactly located on the outside of my house. You need to go through the outer doors to get to it. It's hard to explain, and to get myself and the lock into a better position I have taken it out and replaced it with a spare I bought from a hardware store as I feel this lock is too old and worn out.

I think you need a 5 pin bump key instead of a 6 pin, that's why it's not going in all the way.

Schlage SC1 5 pin

Schlage SC4 6 pin

im sensing an overwhelming amount of n00b here.

a 5 pin bumpkey should work for a 6 pin lock. least, thats according to zeke79 i think. search around for his bumpkeys_compressed guide. that is a really good beginners guide to bumpykeys.

and i cant tell whether you are picking a lock in use or not, but dont. if you replaced it and are picking/bumping a lock that WAS in use but isnt anymore, well, thats ok.

The lock is no longer in use, and both keys are 5 pins. The shoulder of my bumpkey just doest make contact with the plug all the way into the keyway. It's very odd, and i've had little success by the pull back a pin method. I usualy turn after impact of the bump, but this lock seems stuck. When I bump the key in it just goes in with no clicks after I release tension. Maybe some WD-40 or silicon oil will make it easier and loosen things up?
