Broken Picks in Ignition

Postby mako » 14 Sep 2006 5:04

I have an auto ignition that i'v been practicing on and have broken a jiggler and two extractors inside of it. I cannot pull them out with regular tweezers or extractors.

has anyone got a suggestion?

A sound bite from the end of "men in tights" would make a cool forum feature.

Call a locksmith or get some very skinny needle noses or vice grips.

turn the car on it's side and shake it and the pieces should just fall out.

specifics regarding what type of ignition might help here, but chances are there is no easy way out here, since removal of ignitions generally requires that ignition to be turned.

make a tool

Postby raimundo » 14 Sep 2006 8:19

make a tool somewhat like a hair pin, but with plenty of spring and made not to pinch together, but to spread, this can be pinched together and worked into the keyway, then allowed to spread pushing the pins or wafers out of the keyway, then if you cannot make it fall out, dangle the lock keyhole down and put a paper clip into the keyway, and tape a magnet onto the end you will hold, the tape will prevent the magnet from moving and it may transfer enough magnetism into the keyhole to pull the broken key out with gravity assist. if it dosent come out right away, move the paper clip wire a bit to see if its in need of dislodgeing.
If that dosent work, look into dissasembling the lock somehow, anyway, thats what I would try I guess.

Peterson makes tools for pulling out broken keys from Ignitions. Their basicly like a pair of small pliers with saw blade ends.
You can make your own, but only using one blade, like a small scroll saw blade. Remove the cross tip from the blade (if there is one) and insert the blade so the saw teeth are pointing out towards you. Then try to hook the broken pieces. You may need to lift any tumblers obtructing easy removal.

Here's a pic of an extractor (far right of pic) made from a scroll saw blade:

A strong magnet and pin like mentioned above sounds like a good bet as well. Again you may need to move some tumblers out of the way.

A good extractor i use a lot is the wire one your screw in made by HPC,

As said you need to start to strip the lock down, if you follow the guides above you will find a way that suits you to get the wafers or pins to a correct height to allow the lock to be stripped,

Before we get into picking or removing ignitions i will lock this thread,
