What would I need to perform a lockout service in England, how much should I charge for it, what are the legal and moral implications, and is it professional, in our trade, to do this, on a casual basis (Initially)? I was thinking of offering a weekend service at first, then offering a wider range of service, as my experience, skills, and flair increase. i think 2mush did a what you need to start as a lockie?

the advice i will give is the kit you will need is not cheap
as the van,and the stock!!

as well as the knowledge of all the locks you may come up against!

take your time and think before taking the plunge.

The guides in the Business section are pretty much invaluable if you're thinking of going into the locksmith business, they certainly helped me plenty.

One thought I had on your situation is the problem of being weekend only... how are your potential customers going to know this? Will you be turning down any work you might get in the week? Turning down 5/7 of your work isn't going to do much to develop a good reputation. I've not been in the business too long but already a lot of my work is coming from word-of-mouth recommendations instead of traditional advertising.

Also, lockouts aren't really the majority of calls that come through, many more are lock replacements or faulty locks, so again you're cutting down on the number of jobs that you can do, and again alienating potential customers who might not see the difference between a lockout specialist and a locksmith.
