Padlocks usually take some drilling/cutting to disassemble, so you'd probably be better off getting a cheap household lock such as a kwikset, stripping that down and removing all but 1 pin, as they are pretty cheap.

Do a search for 'kwikset_rekeying_manual.pdf' for instructions as to how to strip it down. You don't need to buy any tools to do this. As stated by someone else on this forum, you can make a plug follower from the body of a soda can which has been rolled around a pencil. Also, to remove the spindle and lock housing, you can just use a flat-bladed screwdriver.

Hope this helps, and welcome to a new and incredibly interesting hobby/profession.

P.S. Home made half-diamond, home made hook, home made snake for raking.

Home Despot, er Depot, in my area (Texas) carries Kwikset repinning kits for about $10. They include a plug follower, pins and the 'pickle fork' tool to remove the cylinder from door knobs (screwdriver works too as Mad Mick said). That way you can practice with different pin mixes (for even more picking fun).

Also, Kwikset are great to practice on because removing a Kwikset deadbolt from your door actually improves the security of your home  (check for people's comments about the pickability of Kwiksets, if you don't get that joke).

Installing a new deadbolt and possibly KIK gives you great installation/ repinning practice. Then of course you all of a sudden have two practice locks, and a nicer looking/more secure door.
