Theres a really nice Search feature here, all of your pick making questions have been farily well discussed. But enough of that, do tell where did you get such a wonderful amount of material of the perfect dimensions? Discuss this heavily please, its a new idea here.

dipstick

Postby PYRO1234321 » 27 Jan 2004 19:38

this stuff is really good (for picks and wrenches), i often wondered myself if i really needed a dipstick in my truck.... (trany fluid sticks too)

but i have made a few trips to scrap yards which were fairly successful, but on occation i have found them to thick for my preferences. it appears to me that this type of metal is not quite a ridgid as sweeper bristols but some people like more flex...

when grinding these, keep'em cool. they go from spring steel to soft (anealed) metal in a fraction of a second, tempering will make them a little harder if you over heat, but it will never be the same as original. i haven't really compared, but plumbers snake is likely a very similar material. similar but much thinner clock spring makes good tubular pick needles when cut in strips.

so where did this stuff come from?

im a man of many tallents repo man, beginer lock smith, mechanic and a novice pyrotechnician . i got it through my work as a mechanic. i was looking for a oil tube for an old mbz and found my tube with a ton of dip tubes. so i took a few (with bosses permission of course) anyways i got it home and started measuring it and it was all the same width and varied from .030 to .032. but i found a supplier that sells it to. so if you need any i can supply all the material anyone would ever need
