Easier to pick in locking direction

Postby almightyares » 31 Jan 2004 21:50

Hello all. I am pretty new at picking, and I am starting to learn how different picks can be used for a specific lock more efficiently than others.

Anyway, I was working on my door of my brothers bedroom for no reason...im not sure what type it is, but its a 5 pin tumbler. I can pick it in about 20-30 seconds in the locking direction. I never picked it to the unlock position. I was searching some of the LP101 forums, and I found that on thread that showed you how to use a rubberband as a plug spinner.

Anyone know if this is a psychological thing going on here, or is it possible that picking in the lock position is easier on some locks? Thanks in advance.

No, its not a psychological thing, sometimes it is a lot easier to pick a lock in the locking direction than in the unlocking direction.

It all depends on the pin configuration, the lock itself, your picking technique just to name a few variables. Sometimes it is easier to pick it in the lock/unlock position but yes you just use a "plug spinner" or "flip-it" to spin it in the direction you need to do the job.

Plug spinners are a life saver :D I often spend 10 mins (i'm a newb) picking a lock and end up picking it in the wrong direction... that's a real pain
