can i make my own cutaway padlock?

Postby Thano » 12 Dec 2006 15:53

I was wondering if there is a detailed instruction on how to make a cutaway padlock. I have an ACE solid brass padlock that I bought many years ago and have since lost both keys. I've read the thread on how to re-pin it and figured if I was going to be doing some damage to it, why not just make a cutaway.

Sorry for not having a picture of the actual lock, but I don't have a camera in my dorm. I can get some up tomorrow afternoon (US eastern time) if need be.

Yes, just search a little bit and you will find lots of ideas how to do it.

This could be a good start, too:

(The one in my sig is in there, too, and hopefully your master piece soon as well :) )

Cheers,

Thanks mh, those gave me some good ideas. Any recomendations on which tools to use? Depending on which kind of view, I was thinking drill or grinding wheel. Happen to know if a cutoff wheel would work?

A cutoff wheel will work, in fact, it's what I use.

Dremel cutting wheels and plain hacksaws are popular for making cuttaways.

Deburring stays one hell of a job though.
Long live the needle files.
