Kwikset Deadbolt Help

Postby Emrys » 15 Dec 2006 0:21

Well, I feel a little stupid posting this. I'm sure most of you laughed when you saw my subject line. I've noticed Kwikset deadbolt security to be someone of a joke amongst us. But for some reason, I'm stuck!
This is my first post to this forum, but I've been picking for about 4 months now. The majority of it out at sea. While Wal-Mart locks, Master, and numerous American Locks, including the 5200 have fallen to me, I'm stuck on this Kwikset.
I can get the Weiser deadbolt really easily, but the Kwikset deadbolt feels weird. Of the 5 pins, it feels like i can get 3 to 4 to set. the 3rd doesn't bind, and the 5th feels set but I didn't even push it down. I've only gotten it one time, but I wasn't sure what i did. Any thoughts on what I could be doing wrong? I'm using a small half-diamond pick. Thanks for any advice.

sounds like you have a pin that sets very low. You should verify if this is the case. Whn this happens to me, I stay away from that pin, and pick around it using a variety of other picks. They are easy to over-set, making life miserable. Other than that, my only advise is to keep at it. Use very light tension and lift each pin very slightly.

Keep at it, eventually you'll figure it out. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I was thinking that I might have been oversetting it. Most locks haven't given me this much trouble, but this one's been kicking my ass for the past 2 days. I carry it around in my pocket and pick it when i'm bored :) lol
I've been trying very light tension & I'll work on trying not to overset it. Which one do you think is set too low? the 3rd or 5th?

its possible you are over setting some pins. i would say just for fun take the lock apart and see what the bitting is like/make sure nothing is wrong with the lock.

kwiksets can be deceptively hard especially when you commonly work with other types of locks. kwikset is probably one of the crappiest locks made, and as such they are sometimes less consistent to pick.

try everything from feather light tension to moderate tension, and just keep trying it till you get it. or just give it a rest for a day or two and come back to it. sometimes that helps also. some people suggest you pick while watching a movie, because if you concentrate too hard on the lock you tend to have a harder grip and get too close to it.

Try some different sized hooks. Maybe your small half-diamond is *too* small.

I've tried the small half diamond, large half diamond, and feeler on there. I haven't tried anything else because that's all I've made :) Wears my fingers raw trying to file those things down from allen wrenches, but i think they look really good. You really appreciate your own work when you're done too.
I'll devote some more time to it today to see if I can crack that thing. It's a good lock, brand new and I've verified everything works smoothly. Nonetheless, I think I might break down and just take all the pins out & start from 1 & work up to 5. That way I get a better feel for what's going on with each pin. That's what I had to do for this 6 pin American Locks padlock. Thing was a beast.
Thanks for the help, guys.

Alright, I finally figured it out. it took a little bit of time. But, I ended up taking the pins out and started with 1 & worked my way up to 5. I hit a snag when I replaced pin #2 (from the front). I realized that this pin sets EXTERMELY low. that was giving me a hard time setting pins 3,4, and 5. I could actually pick the lock in seconds with all the pins in, minus pin #2. Once I had this in mind, I returned the pins to normal and picked it again. it made picking the lock much easier. It's amazing how little stuff like that will set you back. It's a lesson well learned though 8)

I just ran into almost the exact same problem with my first lock. Some people gave me some really good tricks in the thread I made to try and work around really low pins. The post is called "Just started, and I have a question" if you want to go look at the tips they gave me.

Thanks for the link. It's got some good material on there.

BTW, I'm in the navy, so when i go out to sea I tend to get bored. It's a good time to pick up new hobbies. :) I just happened to pick up lock picking. I turned into my divisional locksmith. One morning I had to unlock 5 guys' lockers! Believe that? It seems like people didn't start locking their keys in their lockers until I started picking locks. lol
