Heya, my name is Dave and I am just starting to look into lock picking. I just wanted to get into it as kind of a hobby, something to play around with when I'm bored at home.
I was just wondering where are good places to start, good tutorials to read, or videos to watch. I did download the files available on the LSI website, and I downloaded a shim tutorial of the forums here.
And as every newbie probably asks, what is a good lock picking set to purchase to start off with? I have seen everywhere from a 5 piece to some ungodly amount. I am not overly worried about costs, as long as what I get is useful. I was also considering stoping by the local book store and check out some lock smithing books.
Anyway, I will appreciate any help or advice I am given.
Thanks again

Welcome everybody,
For all thoes new to the site and lockpicking, LP101 is a great place to start.
Take a look at the new users section, first and don't be afraid to ask any questions just remember to try a search before posting.
If you're looking for locks to pick, buy some but, DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU RELY ON
I repeat DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU RELY ON, they can and will break, then your house/car/safe/chasity belt is vulnerable or unable to be opened (think: emergency situation).
Cheers,
UWSDWF

Thats a great link to a sticky I have already read, but the main question I had wasn't where to buy picks, it more of how big/may should I get?

ok, thanks I guess.
I guess this is one of those web communities that like to tell you to read everything, don't ask questions because none of us want to help, and if you can't find what you want by reading you're too stupid to be amongst us.
Either way, thanks for the help.
I'll go back to reading

Actually, that's not at all true. I am new here and I found a ton of info in the search function. Just type in what you want and you'll probably find it. Most people come on here and in their first few posts ask the same questions that have been asked several times over and I'm sure the veterans around here just get tired of answering over and over. Everyone around here is very cool about answering questions and I've not seen them treat anyone as stupid.

well, I guess I was being over sensitive, you weren't really rude, I did kinda barge in asking the same old questions every other n00b asks, so I apologize
after getting over my uber newbness I did some research here on the forum and found some decent info, now I think I know where I am going.
I will get my pick set and some practice in and then I may have some serious questions.
oh, I did want to ask about disassembling a lock though, what would be the easiest type of lock to disassemble to practice with, i.e. removing some pins and what not?
and to start off, would it be alright to make my own tension wrench? I found a good tutorial...well it looked to me anyway, on how to make one, or would it just be best to wait for the complete picking set?
as for books to buy, is there really a point? I mean I have read some decent tutorials today and I was just curious how much more in depth would a book be? Basically I am asking is it really worth taking the time?
anyway, sorry for being all "green" earlier, thanks for having patience.

depending on your location, a euro cylinder, or a basic deadbolt would be the top choices.... and to start off, would it be alright to make my own tension wrench? I found a good tutorial...well it looked to me anyway, on how to make one, or would it just be best to wait for the complete picking set?
if you make a tension wrench might as well make a hook pick too.... anyway, sorry for being all "green" earlier, thanks for having patience.

it isnt usually a problem, just make sure you hang around awhile...

I don't have a problem making a hook pick, in fact I will have time tomorrow if I wanted too, I will try and find a decent lock tomorrow as well.
And not that anyone cares, but I will keep you updated with my progress because...well...because I am like that
anywho, thanks for the advice.
...bedtime....
