well, i dont understand what it is you're saying is happening. something about a really weird noise, but i dont quite follow. try re-explaining it please.

second, dump the coat hanger. now. in fact, dont even keep reading this until you have gotten rid of it.

good. now, there are a number of things that will work MUCH better for a pick. and if you're really cheap, or dont have the time and/or skills, you can always use a very common couple of things, namely: bobby pins (also known as hair pins) and a clip from a pen (the metal kind of clip, you pull it out and it does wonders in a pinch)

those two things are going to do a lot better than a coat hanger, please note: you will need to modify both a bit with one or two pairs of needle nose pliers in order to obtain usage.

then, after you have done that, then try raking and see what happens. also, you might want to start with single pin picking (referred to as SPP) and not get too attached to raking, yes it is faster, but SPP can bring you far more joy.

here's a pic of my own first pick i ever made. made of hairpin. the pic is blurry and huge, but that is actually toned down, and cropped. it doubles as a half diamond on one side, and a short hook on the other. try making that and post your results/problems/donation to krypos for awesome help.

You can also make high quality picks from hacksaw blades. If you look around the site you can find templates and with enough practice the home made picks are just as good as picks bought from companies. If you would like to buy picks you can try www.lockpickshop.com. They will sell to you and if you enter the coupon #LP101 you get 10% off. Good luck and happy picking.

actually, for hooks, I've been moving away from hacksaw blades, and to bycicle spokes. You take 2 pairs of pliers and bend them into a nice shaped hook and file and sand them untill they glow. Also keep the tension light. It doesn't take too much. I had a heck of a time single pin picking untill I discovered that. Look in viewtopic.php?t=17220 for some great ideas.

probably tension

Postby gostone » 29 Dec 2006 0:00

Tension on plug is very important, you need enough to bind the pins on the shear line, but not so much or they won't even go up properly.
What kind of master lock is it? Does it seem to have security pins?

I'd say : use very little tension and try to feel the pins. If some feel differently, they may be security pins. Try to push them harder while releasing some tension. Some other pins may unset, but then you'll only have to reset them and voilà :)

well. i dont follow your post that well. but try moving away from padlocks for a while. go to your local hardware store and pickup some cheap deadbolts.

then you can follow digital_blues beginner exercise. that will teach you and help you immensely.

trust me on this. do that, and it is almost guaranteed that you will progress.

Postby paliincali415 » 30 Dec 2006 2:03

OK well

the lock looks like this just a little smaller.

http://www.hardwarestore.com/media/prod ... ont200.jpg

the lock: the lock is kinda old. and i really do not use it. plus i lost the key. so yeah.... I do not know if it is a security lock.

tension: i think that the tension i put isnt much... i ut no more tension then it takes to turn your key in a key hole.

picking it: i tried to use a half diamond s rake and rake... no luck...

could some1 tell me why this is happening or give me tips plz

i get a lot of pins down but i think 1 or 2 of them just wont stay down. so please help..

thx. :D

It may have one or two spool pins. Does the lock turn slightly and then stops, and all pins react with no springiness?

Do like krypos says and go and buy a cheap deadbolt, then go to viewtopic.php?t=10677&highlight=beginner+exercise
and do it. I'm still working my way through (I'm on five pins though) When you get your deadbolt to work, then you can try other stuff. Also, I guess this is just me, but I have a heck of a time whenever I try a padlock, their just to small for me to feel whats going on.
