Im new so please go easy! MasterLock Padlock

Postby designer1 » 2 Jan 2007 16:02

Hello to all - Im very new to this...so if its just me being inexperienced i apologise in advance! I have picked a few basic locks - and thought for a new challenge I would pop to Homebase to buy a new challenge - A MasterLock Padlock is what i have (i believe) It has master written on it and next to the barrel it has No 140. I have tried to pick this lock for a worrying long time now to no avail! Ive tried raking and picking it - When I release tension after giving up - I can hear the pins snap back as the locks snaps back tos resting point. Please can someone help me on this one as im pretty stumped! The brass Padlock only cost £6.99 so I cant imagine its too advanced - could it be security pins? if so what are they ? and how would i pick it ?

I have a basic 5pc lockpick set (bought) & im in the UK (if that helps)

The key is also pointed on the end - dont know if this is relavent at all?

Any help would be appreciated - thanks in advance

Yes, the 140 has security pins. You can search the site for security pins, spool pins, mushroom pins, etc and find more info.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

the #140 has at least one spool, maybe 2. and some one last night told me it had a serrated pin but im not to sure about this.

Your slimline hook is your friend with this lock, very little tension is required. and with practice you will *master* it. i can open both my #140s in under 10 seconds now after a few tries. if its getting to you work on another lock and go back to it.

The 140 has 3 spools and 1 serrated pin. Not the best lock to start on, but a good lock to get used to spools once you have the basics of picking.

Go to Ebay etc and get an ERA, Bird, Arrone, Sterling cheap type cylinder (not Yale) which will have 5 pins and no spools. then follow DB's lockpicking exercise and repin it to 2 pins then 3, 4, 5 until you got it sussed.
