I just got a Masterlock No. 1, and a Masterlock "Contractors Grade" diskus type lock, with a No. 40 on the front. I was curious if anyone knows what kinds of pins these have, and any other information.
Thanks.

When Chucklz checks in, I'm sure he'll know specifics. Master locks seem to be part of his bailiwick.

The Masterlock number 1 is a piece of crap. It cost 8 dollars, and took me about 30 seconds to pick. I was hoping that one would keep me busy for a while. It was in the "High Security" section.
The diskus lock is still giving me trouble. I havent been able to get it yet. Hopefully soon.
I'd like to know if it has spools or mushrooms though. Just to know what I'm up against.

Depends on what store your at. On the internet "low security" masterlocks can equate to a "high security" lock in a hardware store. From my experiences "maxiumum security" is medium security. Even the gold weather resistance masterlocks are advertises as "maximum security" and they are shown as low security on the website. Who wants a low security lock anyway? People buying bulk! Where do people buy bulk? On the web!
www.masterlock.com
This has at least been my experience, don't take me for granted.

Alot of time you use cheap padlocks for the impression of security. Say in a computer room where if something got stolen you can say to insurance company "but i had a brand name padlock on it" or to stop people from using an opportunity to steal an item.
Consider me inactive or lurker.

Yeah, that would make sense about the brand name thing.
Any info on that diskus lock yet

I've only had time to play with one No.40 lock, and it did not have any spools in it.
As pickers, I think we all look down a bit too much on Master. While certainly easy to pick most of their product line, pick resistance is often a small concern securitywise for many applications. If I shop around, I can find a 3LH (long shackle) for around four dollars each, if they are on sale. Definately enough lock for my shed, and thousands of other applications. Not exactly an Abus Granit, but certainly not as bad as we often make it seem.

I agree that any very strong lock, that is easily pickable could be criticized by a picker. The thing is, I am a very novice picker. I have a good set of Rytans, and I have read the MIT guide, but as for experience, I do not really have that much. For someone such as me, with very basic picking skills, to be easily open a lock advertised as a good lock, that is where my criticism comes in.

I actually have that pick. It just doesnt want to open. I have been trying to pick it pin by pin using a rytan miniblue diamond hook. Raking it doesnt seem to get me anywhere.

remember that it is the pin configuration that matters as much as the lock type. i have dozens of master locks, some open with one rake of a wrench handle, and others have high-low pin configurations (high in the back, with the low obstructing it) that actually take some effort/thought with a hook/diamond.

Sorry, if you highlight the link, hit Ctrl + C (copy), and in your internet browser address bar hit Ctrl + V (paste), you will be able to download it. Geocities doesnt allow direct linking to their sites.
Its not that great of quality so I could keep the size down, but it shows the lock being opened with that one rake.
