Standard or slimline picks for Australia

Postby korlan » 28 Jan 2007 6:24

Hey i'm pretty new to lock picking, I think this is my 1st or 2nd post, going to buy some picks but didn't want to buy the wrong ones for locks in Australia (where I live).

Basically, does anyone know if I should use standard or slimiline picks in Australia?

Quickly searched the forums to see if there was a quick answer to this, searched for a few minutes and didn't find an answer, so sorry if there is some blatantly obvious answer that would take about two seconds to find.

Thanks any help is appreciated.

Slimline/Standard picks in Australia

Postby mercurial » 28 Jan 2007 22:12

It seems the OP has already gotten the answer he was looking for.

Just thought I'd chime in as the replies posted weren't actually from people in Australia.

As JackNco said, you will find both relatively open keyways, and some tightly warded keyways here.

It has been my experience that the slimlines suit both of these, so if only for the sake of versatility, I would definately go for the slimlines. Slimlines also teach you to use a gentle touch, if you find you are bending or breaking them, you really need to ease off.

I am sure you would have read this whilst searching, but just in case - do not go buying a huge set of picks - you will find that you use very few of them. A small beginners set, or a small selection of single-bought picks would be my choice. When you have been picking for a while and know which picks suit your style, you will likely use even fewer of them.

A wider selection of tension wrenches becomes important as you progress. There is no need to buy a load of them, I have found it best to make my own, to suit my needs as they arise. This is very easy, the board is full of ideas and instructions.
