Which additional tension wrench to get?

Postby UnLock » 14 Feb 2004 19:23

I'm going to be ordering the MPXS-14 Kit and two members, Chucklz and marso, mentioned I should also get additional tension wrenches. Now another question is raised...which one? I noticed in the Shop they have about 7 different models. In you opinion which one(s) should I get?

Standard Tension Wrench
Short Twist Flex Tension Wrench
Long Twist Flex Tension Wrench
Thin Line Standard Tension Wrench
Double sided Wishbone Tension Wrench
Double-ended Tension Wrench
Kwick Pick Tension Wrench

Hi, From the range that south ord has I would buy the TW-02 (Short Twist-Flex) if there is not one already. When you are starting out you sometimes bend these so that is why i recommended having more than one. But that depends on what the kit has with it. If it has a few then that is fine. Just a hook, half diamond, snake rake, 2x torque wrench and you will be happy. The rest is just dressing.
Consider me inactive or lurker.

Personally, I am a big fan of the Southord Standard wrench, no twist. Its a personal preference thing. The wishbone tension wrench, not very useful in alot of cases. Id get one of the thin line wrenches and maby an extra standard wrench. If you discover you prefer the twist, you can always add it yourself. Just a word of caution, you should never be using so much tension while picking that you bend your wrench. After you turn the plug a little bit, you may want to use a small screwdriver to do the "opening" if you find that it requires more torque than you think your tools can handle.

Glad to help. Don't forget to tell us how things go, and how you like your tools. And to hopefully give you a head start, I suggest picking up a Kwikset lock, or a Master #3 padlock to begin with. Good luck, and happy picking.

Will do! There's a Liquidation store by me that sells the Kwikset locks for $18 Cdn. Sounds reasonable enough to me. Thanks and I will let you all know how I make out with the tools.

Good luck with the new set. Don't get discouraged if it takes a while to get that first lock. Keep at it, there is nothing better than the feel of a shackle popping open or a deadbolt cylinder turning (well at least for me... hmm maybe I need to get out more  )

P.S. I like your signature.

if you are cheap (like me) then you can make your own tensoin wrench... i use a hairpin, any springy like bit of metal will do though... just make sure it fits the lock

I always recommend the double-ended wrench. That way, you can modify one end, and if it doesn't come out like you want, just snip it off and you have a standard wrench.

Yeah, but dont forget to be disciplined - I tried that and ended up with a really short tension wrench

Rather than spend your money, use the metal spine from an old wiper blade, they're about the right width for european keyways and nice and cheap if you are just starting out.
sledgehammers make excellent back up picks!
