Questions about Masterlock numbers and Kwikset locks?

Postby UnLock » 16 Feb 2004 20:19

Sorry if this sounds like stupid questions but please have mercy on me...I'm new. I've been told to practice on a #3 Masterlock which I'll be buying tomorrow and also a Kwikset which I bought today for $14.00 Cdn. and can be rekeyed.

The Kwikset (TITAN Grade 2 Security brand) is a Double Cylinder deadbolt that has a 6-pin keyway (just noticed it while I was opening the package). It also mentions "6-pin keyway for greater resistance to picking". ...this really doesn't sound like a lock to practice on. Is this the one I should start practicing to pick or do I need a 5-pin to start? Also I chose the Double Cylinder because I figured if I screw one side up I'll have the other to work with. Is this alright?

Ok, now about Masterlocks. what do the numbers represent? The higher the number the more pick resistant it is?

Thanks for any/all answers.

THeres nothing particularly hard about the 6 pin version. IF anything, you should strip it down to a 2 pin lock, pick it for a few hours and add a pin, then pick that for several days etc.

The master lock numbers have nothing to do with resistance to any kind of attack. They are simply model numbers.

Hey Chucklz,

Why is the #3 Masterlock mentioned so many times for beginners to pick? I'm a little confused.

Is it easy to remove the pins from the deadbolt? I'm sure this is mentioned somewhere in the forum but I just haven't done a search for it yet.

Thanks

The number 3 is mentioned because its stocked by pretty much every home center, hardware store, most supermarkets, etc. Its cheap and easy to get. Taking the deadbolt apart is a relatively simple matter. I suggest searching for a do it yourself rekey kit at your home center, or for you to find a bit of 0.500 inch dowel rod. You can use this as a plug follower, of how to use there is plenty on the forums. But, if you wish to only have a few pin stacks, you can probably just pop the little metal clips of the tops of the cylinders that keep everything in place. Jus tdo it inside a plastic bag, so that things dont fly everywhere.

I wish I had read this post (regarding plastic bag use) about 2 weeks ago. I had a lock I was taking apart and it was a bit sticky, then the cap came off real easy - and it was a spring shower - i found all the springs, but its really hard on top of the carpet that I have in the basement.

I know what you mean, I have considered starting several threads only to search and find that the topic was fully discussed 2 or 3 years ago.
