I have acquired a Hurd padlock, but have no information on it. It is about 7 inches tall and 3 inches wide, and has a pretty narrow keyway. I have tried to pick it, but can't get any pins to set. I have tried from very light to very heavy tension with no luck. It is pretty heavy duty. I did some searching here on the board, but can't find any information about it. Can anybody here help me? Any information on when it was made, how to pick it, and possibly how to remove the cylinder from the housing? I have posted some pics below of the lock, the key, and the keyway.

The Foley-Belsaw course covers Hurd padlocks in their "advanced" course. I haven't received them yet because I'm not done with the basic course but I know theres others here that have finished the whole thing and would probably have some answers.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

the cylinder can be remove when the shackle is open only or you have to drill the retaining pin from what i can tell you dealing with a model no 716A9 hurd lock if this is true the word hurd will only be on one side of the lock.the book says it can be picked in most cases ..........hope this helps ............keep trying to pick it

It has Hurd on only 1 side of the body. When I open it, I see a pin in the bottom of the body where the shackle goes. Is that the retaining pin you are referring to? I have tried pushing it in. It pushes in really easy, but doesn't release the core. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

with the lock open try rapping the side of the lock to get the pin loose...........the pin pulls out not in

Anyone who has worked on old fords have worked with hurd locks, thats the company that designed the ford key blank. As to your specific padlock, I would call that one uncommon around my town, in fact while I have seen hurd brass padlocks, I havent seen this KO of an american design.

if it only a 4 pin wich i think it is by locking at the key try just normaly picking it with a S-rake or even anything but i recomend S-rakes for padlocks.

Thanks to everybody for the replies. I don't have any experience with vehicle locks, so I had never heard of Hurd locks until I acquired this one. It is only 4 pins, but it is unusually hard to pick for me. I have tried every pick I have, but none of them seem to work any better than the other. When I use a rake, sometimes I can get 1 pin to set, but I don't know if it is setting or if it is false setting. It seems to have pretty tight talarences.

the key cut on that lock is a 77531 try picking back to front

I've tried front to back, back to front, and from the middle out. It's almost like all of the pins bind at the exact same time, but they're all still really easy to push up, and they're not binding. I'll get it, I just need to work on it a little more.
