American 10 series

I got an old American 10 series (double wafer and no key) and I'm trying to remove the core. I removed the screw under the shackle and have been trying to do the fifth step of removing the core as outlined here
5. Place side of lockbody on flat surface with open shackle hole down. Hit side of the lock with a leather or plastic mallet. You are forcing the retaining pin into the space that the screw occupied. If you will refer to the drawing, you will notice that the pin retains the cylinder by protruding into the slot of the cylinder cap. The pin needs to move just enough to release the cylinder.

I've picked the lock and rotated to ~30 degrees from fully unlocked. But so far I've been unsuccessful in getting the retaining pin to fall into the body of the lock. My guess is its probably encrusted with dirt and is somewhat stuck. Anybody have any experience with this kind of problem?

Got it to work, had to use a heat gun to heat up the lock (presumably to make the grease a little thinner). So my question now is does anyone have experience with hand filing keys for the double-sided wafer cylinder thats in it?
