Is a Masterlock #5 a good first lock for a rookie?

Postby stever2002 » 7 Mar 2007 23:01

I just found an old Masterlock #5 (probably AT LEAST 15-20 years old). Is this a good first lock for someone just starting out, or should I go out and buy something cheap and easy? Would a Masterlock #3 be any easier?

Thanks,
...steve...

yes. thats a great lock to start out on. Just give her some lube. Its nice to have something new becuse its very clean inside and you know its in perfect working order. but its not a must at all. there no need to buy if you already got one. do you have the key to it. ?
master locks #3, #1,#5 and a LOT more have the some 4 pin cylinder inside.. therefore.... there all the dang same.. no matter what one you have unless you get some..witch have 5 pins and security pins...but dont think about all that right now.. just pick that #5.....

Thanks for the reply - what should I lube it with ? Graphite? 3-in-1? WD-40?

No I don't have a key - alas the number is worn off the bottom as well, so I don't think a locksmith could even make me a key.

you dont need a lock smith to make a key for a master padlock... its called impressioning... and i am sure if you stick with lockpicking you will learn it soon...

have you got yourself a good pick set? or ae you going home made. ?

A 20 year old master might give you some trouble. Padlocks can be tough for beginners. I would start with a weiser. You can take some of the pins out and you can't do that on a padlock. good luck 8) 8) 8)
