master lock #21

Postby jimmysmith » 25 Mar 2007 16:12

The other day some one gave me this master lock #21, It looks like a regular master lock and i suspect that it has the same inner workings.
something that kinda struck me as odd was that it looks to have an inchangable keyway.it does not have a m1 keyway, I have not picked it open it yet to see exaclty whats going on. But i plan to very soon..
I have not seen this master lock around. I wonder why not. does anyone else have one of these.

I think I've seen one of these before.. But I'm unsure but if I can remember correctly I didn't think you could actually change the keyway...? But I could be wrong! Let me know, I'm interested lol.

That's a shrouded keyway to discourage drilling or a slaphammer type attack, I believe.

Yep jimmysmith you've probably hit that right on the nose, and seeing that this was posted during 2007 I'm sure the poster probably figured this out haha.

I know its old, but-

If you open the shackle there is a hex screw directly inside. By unscrewing, the cover you see on the bottom can be removed. The cylinder pops out at that point, and you can rekey/replace it.

There are other profiles that should fit in the lock body ( I think 17, 27, 15, the like). The #1 cylinder uses an adapter on the back of the cylinder, so the longer cylinders should fit, though not the pro series cylinder.

These particular type of master locks are generally sold at locksmith shops, and are usually just a few dollars more than their non rekeyable companions.

wish there was an edit-
these are actually a bit easier to drill then standard master locks.

They use these kinda padlocks a lot in public schools to lock up gates and fences around here.

I found that they often are master keyed and real easy to pick with light scrubbing.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture
