got thinking-would this work

Postby Sipe » 23 Feb 2004 14:36

if i was trying to pick a regular pin-tumbler lock would this work?...

first stick a straight pick into the lock and lift all the pins as high as they will go

next you use a tension wrench to apply Light tension

once you have tension slowly release all the pins at the same time by bringing your pick towards the bottom of the lock. (slowly)

could someone tell me if this would open the lock and if not why not???

Thanx!!! :D

reverse picking

Postby PYRO1234321 » 23 Feb 2004 14:52

i've also thought about "reverse picking", but it never seems to work as well as normal picking. it may be just me, but it is easier to apply slight tension rather than remove it. once the tension is light enough to unbind, then you have to deal with the downward pressure of the spring and momentum of the pins, rather than your own variable pressure that your could adjust with a pick on an individual pin. the springs want to do what they were designed to do, push all the pins down (assuming the pins are on top) , and that force combined with the different binding order of the pins makes it impossible to adjust the torque for different pins because its an all-or-none set up with a flat edge in contact with all pins. I suppose its possible, but not very likely. I'm not really an expert so i'm sure others could shed more light/experiences.

cheers

Reverse picking can be useful on a variety of locks with spool pins, etc. Generally heavy torque is applied with the pins all raised to the highest leve. Reducing torque theoretically allows the bottom pins to fall down, while trapping the top pins at the shear line.
