Ruger Safety Padlocks

Postby Mankato » 9 Apr 2007 23:13

Has anyone else tried picking these? I tried picking one the other day and it was easier then that 5-pin practice tumbler (#5PPC).

The one I had, according to the key, was a 4-pin tumbler, but it it seemed like only the 4th pin back was keeping it locked. It was brand new out of the package. The first pin didn't even seem like it had a spring behind it.

I used a half-diamond pick. I put it all the way to the back, pushed up and click, open. I was reading on their website that all of there older locks had a problem being too easy to pick and that their new line was supposed to fix this, but it doesn't seem to be.

This is the second lock I have picked since I started it as a hobby a couple weeks ago. I was really hoping for more of a challenge from the padlock.

Anyways, for the record, Ruger Padlocks, or at least the one I bought, are easy to pick. Where are the difficult brands to pick? Keep in mind, I'm still a n00b.

Ruger

Ruger as in the firearms company, when you see a brand name once signifiying quality, put on some cheap stuff from another specialization, most likely the company has diversivied and cheapened its name, that said, the shoes Im wearing from payless or someplace, are made by or for the Stanley tool company which is the brand on the shoes. they have steel toe caps and otherwise look like sneaks or as they call them over there, 'trainers'. the shoes are living up the the quality of the name on them so I guess when a brand moves out of its specialization, it does not always mean they have started wasting the brand on crap.

Well now that you mention it it does appear to made by a different company. In fact, the Ruger logo itself is just on a slide on cap. I'm curious to know now what actual company makes Ruger locks.

Man, I was hoping I wouldn't have to do more reading.

Haha, I saw Ruger and it reminded me of how my friend was joking about getting me a Mark II for my birthday... gts.

Ruger does make locks, I don't think someone else would have used the name either.

And... what logo? Was a pic posted?

But regarding the easy pick:
http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/ ... ogram.html

"In 2001, Ruger learned that certain of these devices can be opened in unintended ways:
• Some keys other than those supplied can open our earliest lock box padlocks. These padlocks were provided with lock boxes which accompanied certain of our pistols and revolvers from 1987 until approximately 1995 (see image above).
• Red colored cable locks (see image above), which have accompanied our rifles and shotguns since 1998 and which have also been utilized by trade associations and law enforcement, can be opened when struck forcefully in a certain fashion."

Maybe you have one of the older locks?

Idk what padlocks to suggest, I've been picking for some months now but I still haven't had any real challenges---well actually, there was this one miscellaneous u-haul lock that was killing me, so if you can get your hands on one of those...

It is the Red Label padlock here:

http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/ ... s-SH.html#

It is under "New Locking Devices" so if its an old one is out of the question. The logo I am talking about is the black strip on the top with a red Ruger logo on it. Its just a piece of rubber that easily slides off to reveal a generic no-name lock. You'd think that Ruger would brand the lock itself, but I really have no idea. I'm just speculating.

I guess the only thing I had to say about all this is that the Ruger padlock was surprisingly easy to pick. I figured a company like Ruger would make a higher quality product. Who knows? Maybe I'm just a n00b that got lucky.

One of my Kel-Tecs came with a padlock you slid behind the trigger. It says its made by "Guard". I also found that if i just mess with the last pin it will open.
Im also new to the hobby so im opening anything i can (or at least trying to lol).

Not a great idea to be posting picking gun locks in public, too many bad things in the news already. Avid NRA supporter.

I'm a huge Ruger fan and the quality of their firearms is top notch. However, the padlock that came with my KP90 .45ACP is a joke (bought last year). It's a good "looking" lock but it's takes all of 5 seconds to pick while raking. The same goes for the lock that came with my Marlin XLR 30-30. Do yourself a favor and keep them in a nice gun safe instead! :)

i have a mossburg lock that came with a shotgun. i figured out is all i have to do is stick the pick in and turn. i can also pull the shackle right out. but then again gun locks are meant for child safety

My cousin just gave me this padlock and pick it like in a few secs but if made by a gun lock company then they better put some security pins in them

are you talking about those little tiny Ruger padlocks?

Cause those are a joke. You don't even need a tension wrench to pick them. Just insert a diamond and turn.... pop the lock opens.

This is true with many tiny cheep padlocks, like the little luggage padlocks. Some of you tiny warded padlocks are almost as easy to open.
