I currently have a sliding patio door which is in the locked position. My ex-partner has the only key and I am hoping to change the barrel for safety/security reasons. I have changed the barrels in my other doors and this was fairly starightforward. I have been told that if I drill into the barrel with a five mil drill bit then I will be able to unlock the patio door with any key therefore allowing me to change the barrel in it once unlocked. Can anyone tell me if this will work? I am a complete novice and cant afford a locksmith at this time. :(

I am very sorry, as I can empathize with the situation you are in, but we cannot, cannot give out information on the destructive bypass of locks. You can imagine that though this information would help you in your immediate security situation, it would potentially jeopardize the safety and security of any number of other people.

Please, if this is a pressing matter, call a locksmith. Your safety cannot be calculated in $.

I'm sorry, but is that UK or US? I'm assuming UK. We have many members in the UK and many who either work professionally or are well integrated into the locksmith community. I'd move for this thread to not be locked, but rather the OPs description cleaned up to remove anything inappropriate to the general forums.

I hope someone's able to help you out, and thank you for understanding, we have a lot of folks who come in asking for similar information who get very riled when we won't answer them.

I will try and delete this one and submit a new edited version. I fully appreciate all your help and I realise now that my initial question was not particularly bright given that It would assist any kind of criminal. :)

heh, you're fine. Users cannot delete their own posts, but I noticed you had posted once before and it had been locked, so I was directing that comment at a moderator or admin who might happen across this thread.

locksmiths

Here, a kind soul clued me in to a good website for searching out UK based locksmiths. Obviously not a direct recommendation for any of these folks, but you can call them, explain your problem, and ask for a quote, see if one isn't more competitive than the other.

And while locksmiths are absolutely running a business, a majority of them aren't out to take advantage. Like I said, make some comparisons and you ought to find someone happy to take on the job for you at a reasonable rate.

Good luck!
