problem with lock after picking

Postby rustyspoon » 11 Jun 2007 4:25

Hi,
After picking a lock I have a problem in that I cannot extract the key once it is in the locked position? No problem to take the key out once it is in the open position.
The lock is a dead lock for the UPVC door...the one where you have to lift the handle to turn the key....Is there anyway to reset it? Any ideas please.

Thanks
J

Are you sure the lock is rotating the full amount before you try to remove the key?

Its very possable that the hot weather weve had has moved your door and that lifting the handle no longer fully locks the door thus not allowing the lock to fully rotate and in turn stopping the key from being retracted,

Open the door,

Try locking it now,

If the key turns fully and then can be withdrawn you most likely need your door hinges adjusting,

If it still doesnt work then it could be somthing else that isnt so easy to explain or describe on here and you should really be calling someone out to fix it,

At the worse you will nbeed a new multistrip but trying the door whilst open will give you/us a better idea of whats happening.

this is where the saying
"dont pick locks you or anyone else relies on!"
comes from.

did you remove the lock from the door to pick it? if you did, the lock might not be lined up properly.
loosen the screw a bit so you get a bit of play in the lock then try locking while the door is open.
if the key doesnt turn all the way jiggle the lock till the key turns and comes out.
tighten screw back up.

You may have a turned cam. Take the cylinder out of the door and remove the key from the cylinder. If the cam is pointing up ( ie at 11 o'clock or 1 o'clock ) you have a turned cam. Replace the cylinder with a new one.

HI,

Point taken Re: "dont pick locks you or anyone else relies on!"

Thanks Simon,
I must of turned a cam...I have now replaced the cylinder.

Out of interest...how do you think I managed to turn it ? Is it a common mistake when picking the locks?

Its not totally common to damage a lock after picking it but it can happen. In the past 7 years I managed to ruin two locks after picking it so just to be safe they only thing that enters our front door lock is the proper key.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture
