89 Jeep Ignition Key Lock Broken

Hello All,
The ignition key lock won't turn with the key, and appears damaged inside. Can the key lock be removed by drilling out the key hole (the space where the key fits in the lock) and removing the tumbler pins and springs (or trying to)? Are there any diagrams to show how that 89 Jeep key lock is constructed ? If so , where can I get a diagram?

Accessing the lock by removing the steering wheel does not seem to be an option since the Jeep Repair Manual states the key must be used to turn the lock with this procedure.

This is an old car used for work and I wouldn't care if I simply used a screwdriver to turn the igntion switch after the key lock was removed. At the moment I'm just trying to get the key lock out.

Well you've got a real predicament on your hands here... But I'm sorry to say that I don't see anyone here helping you unless you can prove you own the car (probably by way of hiring one of the practicing lock-men to come take care of it for you).

also, I'm fairly sure that ignitions are wafer mechanisms (somebody correct me if I'm wrong)

My advice is get a working smith in your area to set you up... Having to start you car with a screwdriver is both a security risk (how ready would you be for work if you car dissapeared) and a potential pain in the a-ss (what would you say to a police officer who decided to take a look at the ignition?)

I cant speak for anyone else, but I would have no problem with showing you how to do it, provided you payed me what one would normally charge for repairing the device.
