does anyone have experience removing a kwikset deadbolt plug in order to repin it. I saw this tutorial viewtopic.php?t=10505 but I can't figure out how to remove the ring that apparently keeps the plug in place. when you remove the plug it should go through the back of the lock, correct?

um... the side the key goes in is the side the plug will come out... the clip on the back... just tare it off with a little screwdriver or pliers

are you supposed to take out the small hollow rod that attaches the keyed part of the deadbolt to the knob on the other side of the door first?

Sounds like you have a knob lock and not a deadbolt. Take a pair of needle nose pliers and pull the hollow rod out, a little twisting motion will help. If you don't have a kwikset tool then you will need to use something to knock the plug out through the front of the knob. You will then have a clip on the back of the plug that needs to be removed.

sorry I meant to type this with the above link.
This is a nice picture tutorial that Isakill did......he uses the kwikset tool, but you should be able to use the pictures and what jimb wrote in order to do it.

just take the C clip off, its holding the rod on. after you get the clip off, use the key to turn the plug 45 degrees or more and pull. (or more accurately, push with your plug follower)

thanks i finally got it off just using a small screwdriver to pry off the C clip. any suggestions on a better tool to use though as a screwdriver tends to bend the C clip?

I have repined mine many times. I use a screw driver every time but before I put it back on I bend it back.
