Help bumping master lock No 3

Postby sk8aj » 27 Jul 2007 7:00

ive got a number 3 master padlock and ive been trying to bump it with a masters bump key. Im using a old hammer with electricity tape on one of the ends. Everytime i try and bump it, it never opens, when i realease the pressure i can hear 2 or 3 pins coming down. Is there anything im doing wrong, i know im putting the pressure on the right way, anymods i need to make to the key? i will take a picture of the key asap

If you hand filed the key you most likely cut the spacing too close to each other and maybe even the ramps and peaks a bit too high. Thats the most common mistake we all make on our first attempt in making a hand filed bump key. But yeah, get the picture of the key up and we'll be able to help you a better.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

its a M1 key but a M3 lock, would they make a difference, they both have the same grooves and the same amount of pins.

By M3 I assume you mean a Master No. 3 right? If it is then the key should work since the M1 blank is the one used for the M3 padlock

Your hammer is likely too heavy for a proper bump. Try a screwdriver or the make your own bump hammer thread might also be a good option.

To me it sounds like you are putting too much pressure on it since you can hear the pins dropping down, it could be the set pins but my guess is its because of too much pressure.
