Snap gun works great... but question....

I'm trying to pick a kwikset deadbolt and I'm able to do it relatively quickly and easily enough witha snap gun but I'm having turning problems.

The cylinder only spins about 25% of the way and stops. From reading some posts here it seems i need to use a screwdriver or a stronger turning tool to exert more pressure. I tried the tip of a key but did not want to cause damage to the key or the lock so i did not turn to hard.

any suggestions?? TIA

Small screwdriver should work once picked.

I have an offset screwdriver whose head I ground down, just for that purpose. It also works great for screws (duh) and opening cans of paint.

well, i tried a small screwdriver and no dice... standing keyside the door is hinged on the right and the lock is on my left so i assume that the cylinder should open turning clockwise, that is the direction that it picks. I can't get it to turn any further without damage.

Do i need a plug spinner?

Yes, a plug spinner would work, or try picking it in the opposite direction. What kind of a lock is it?

Unlock the door before picking(asuming its installed), if its the deadbolt thats keeping you from opening it(sticking) this will release the tension from the cylinder allowing you to finnish turning the it. If that works then you know you need a stronger tension tool(allen key with a ground end) for opening.

Is it possible for a kwikset to have any spools or mushrooms? If the lock is only turning about 5-10%(correct me if im wrong) then it could be security pins.

I just looked at what appears to be a newer Kwikset rekeying manual. Yes, spools appear possible, but Kwikset asks that whomever rekeys the lock to place them exclusively in the first three chambers.

Man, I should really read the original posts more carefully before replying...If you're having difficulty with opening the lock, and are absolutely sure you have it picked (that is, it does turn at least 45 degrees) then you just need more turning pressure. If you are picking the lock with the door closed, it very well could be that there is pressure against the bolt of the lock not allowing it to retract. This being the case, either pull or push on the door slightly while turning should relieve the pressure against the lock.

If you are having problems turning the cylinder with the door open, then something is not aligned properly inside the lock. The easiest way to tell is to try the key. If the key works smoothly then there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to turn it with a screwdriver (maybe you just need a bigger screwdriver.)
