Safe/Combination

Postby mlv1991 » 10 Apr 2004 7:22

I have a combination safe in my room that I bought at a Rite-Aid drugstore a couple of years ago. I soon after forgot the combination. There is no shackle on the outside. Is there any way to figure out this type of combination lock?

Which thread tells about opening the combination locks that you use on suitcases that have combinations like 9-3-5-2 ...

Thanks

Hi, yesterday I came accross the howstuffworks article on Safe Cracking - www.howstuffworks.com/safecracking.htm/printable - and I think this might be an interesting read for you. It covers the basics means by which people gain access to safe's, and one thing which seems particularly applicable to your situation (I'm presuming you dont want to damage the safe when gaining entry) is that they normally contain factory default combinations which people dont bother changing. If this is the case with you, you might be able to phone up the company which makes it and ask them for assistance etc.

There have also been several threads on LP101 which cover the workings of combination locks, so the search button is your friend.

search this site for "Sesamee Decoder" (without the qoutes)... the threads about those will explain how to pick those types of locks.

You can open suitcase combination locks quite easily by using a feelers guage or other thin strip of metal. Just slide it in between the number dial and rotate the dial until the thin piece of metal or feeler gauge rests on a flat spot. Repeat on all the dials then try to open. If it doesnt open just reverse the flat spot ie if the dial has 6 numbers on it turn the dial back 3 spaces.
Sometime you can actually just see in between the dials and dont need the feeler gauge.

Just to go on what you said... some of the Master (combination) suitcase locks also have a weakness. If you look carefully at the numbers, there will seem to be a 'notch' under or behind the numbers/wheel/dial/knobs/etc. In the case of my locks, the actual combination is the opposite - meaning, if the notch is under number '3', then you turn it so '3' is on the far-hidden side of the lock. It's something I found out about a year ago when I was bored. 8)
