The difference is the handles of the picks. The picks in the PXS kit are the same thickness all the way through. They're thin and more bendable. The picks in the MPXS kit have re-enforced handles. Their handles are nice and stiff, thicker, and much more comfortable to hold. If i were you, I'd go with the MPXS kit. Much better picks and a nice variety of them fitting into a nice little package.
Thats my recomendation anyways.

This has been covered, but it's kind of hard to search for, so no foul.
I always suggest folks buy individual picks instead of a set, unless they really want the case. You get too much useless crap with all the SouthOrd sets.
Also, I'm just about the only person around that prefers the non-handled PXS picks. Whichever set you do decide to get (if you decide to get one), maybe plunk down the extra $2 and get an extra hook with the opposite kind of handle, just so you know what they're like.

Ahh yes. Some people say the unhandled picks give better feedback, which I suppose is theoretically true cause theyre one solid piece of metal. However, spider is in the minority, not that thats bad, but its just how it is.

Frankly, in the beginning, it doesnt matter too much what set you have, or what picks you get, because you have no idea what you will prefer in the future. Personally I would get a cheap non handled set, and throw in a handled short hook. You will find that you really dont need handles for raking, and even more importantly, you will find that you only use about 3 of the picks in your set with any regularity. The short hook is almost certain to be one of those picks, and is probably the pick that is most applicable to pretty much any situation. Try it in the handled, and see what you think.

Spring steel, stainless steel, it doesn't really matter. I have picks made by peterson(spring), southord(stainless), rogan(spring), rytan(I think stainless), and I have a set of Labs on the way. The picks all behave about the same with the exception of the rytans which are the only picks I have ever bent. The rogan picks are by far the toughest and I can not bealive I have not bent or broke one with the amount of abuse I have put them through. If I had to choose only one pick set to have it would be my petersons becase I mostly work standard size pin tumbler locks and they are usually the first set I grab. The biggest differance between all of the picks is the handles and the size of the tools. If I were just starting out and I had the money I would get picks made by peterson, but if I didn't I would stick with southord. Here are the links to all of the sets.

This looks like a locksmith-only catalog, do they sell to the non-locksmithing public? Nathan, that HPC set looks dam reasonable!!! Looks pretty cheap to me, google the set, and see if it is cheap or not.

It's so cheap because keyproducts is a distributor, not a store. If you get them to sell to you, by all means let us know -- but I wouldn't count on it.
