Open Old Safe

I have inherited an old MAJOR SAFE COMANY Safe. I don't think there is much, if anything, in it but it is locked. Can anyone give me information on opening this safe? I called the manufacturer and they will only give the combination to a registered Locksmith. Who I called and he wants $300 + to come and open it. Can someone be of some help?

I think you are going to have to bite the bullet on this one, and pay for the 'smith. If getting your safe open was really easy, it wouldnt be much of a safe would it?

Tell the registered locksmith you'll give him fifty bucks if he'll call and get the combination for you.

Fifty against three big ones....I'd bide my time. Then again, fifty over here only buys you the first round, not a monthly payment on a compact.

how do you know that the combo was not changed after manufacture by a previous owner

Thanks, I don't know if it was changed? And I don't know if this model combination can be changed? It is a Model # 1718 Does anyone hear know?

Not that we advocate that sort of behavior. Besides, if the guy was using it to store his hard liquor or he collected matches or something, that might not be the best idea.

Thermite is not a good idea if you dont know exactly what you are doing. You may mix it up perfectly well, (its easy, but still) and then try and melt open the wrong part of the safe, and then suddenly realize that your floor was not designed to withstand a pool of molten iron..... try explaining that fire claim.

Assuming (which is a bad idea when it comes to safes) that the combination hasn't been changed (maybe a 25% chance that it hasn't) I would first go the route of paying the locksmith to just GET you the combination. He doesn't have to show up, just call and get the thing. If that combination doesn't work, you're going to need the 'smith on-site.

THanks again for the info. I don't think a meltdown is going to work for me. Besides I would like to save the safe. I think it is probable the most valuable part! Like I said I don't think there is much if anything in it. Are there any Locksmiths here that would call and get the combination for me?
