Locksmith Badges / IDs?

A question to the professional locksmiths out there: what badges / ID's do you carry and show to customers? Do any of you use the metal 'police-style' locksmith badges I've seen advertised or are those just a novelty? Are there 'accredited' or 'official' ID's?

going a little off track here but why would you need one? its not like the police where they can just turn up and need to prove who they are. if you didn't call one then the chances are you shouldn't be expecting one...

I use mine loads. When you work for bigger companys, Asda (wallmart), courts, and police, brit nucular fuels etc. All ask for id to be worn. just doing the residential stuff iv never once been asked for ID.

parapilot - when you say you use yours loads, what do you use? A badge? An ID? Who issued the ID?

According to what I've heard, if you are a subscriber to the National Locksmith Magazine or whatever, they can make you an official locksmith id card.

I work for a company, so have it issued. Its printed on plastic card, company name / logo, contact details, my name - locksmith. It looks good. You can get things printed on card for quite cheep now, deffo worth having if your in the game, adds that touch of profesionalism.

Thanks for the info. I'm in the process of enrolling in the FB class, and have been reading up on the licensing requirements for CA.

rwp42: in California it is required that you carry the state-issued locksmith ID at all times while doing work. If you've been reading up on it I guess you already know that this is issued through the BSIS. If you are applying as a company and not as an employee it's likely you'll need a business license as well, which is done at the county, and not state, level. (Some counties do not require this; most do). If your company does not have your surname in it, you'll need to register the business name as well -- and if you are the sole proprietor this can be a simple Fictitious Business Name filing which can be done through your country clerk.

None of it is "hard" to do -- there's no test or anything like that in CA. Really it's just a lot of paperwork (and then making sure you keep up on fees, taxes, etc). Just a lot of hoops to jump through.

I'm no expert on the process but that is how works, as best as I can remember.

blake1803 - Thank you for the real info... I did read up on the CA requirements, and figured that I'd at the minimum have to carry the CA-issued license. My question also refers to the specific 'detective-badge' offered by Foley-Belsaw, for example. Is this just a novelty, or are there real locksmiths who carry them?

It's a novelty item. FB makes them for people who likes to waste money on them. You flash that to a cop in CA and you'll spend the weekend in jail.
