Alright I've saved up the money to buy LSS, but now I am confused on which option to take. Should I buy the hardcover book for $220, or get the LSS+ for $350. Can people who own either of these let me know.

Thanks

Everyone is going to tell you otherwise, but the computer program is a big pain in the ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Buy the book. I have owned 2 different versions of the computer program. The only good thing about the computer program is the multimedia suppliment. If you save your money for a hacker conference where marc tobias attends you can buy the multimedia locksmith edition for $200, which is really a good deal. Otherwise, the computer program expires after 2 years so your book does too. A book is forever.

Yea I can see why the book would be the better choice. Now do you think I should go ahead and buy the book, or save up a bit more money and buy the FB course. Heres a little about me so you know where I'm at --- I would call myself an advanced beginner... I can pick most locks I come by, have plenty of tools, and have a pretty good idea of what I'm doing.

It really depends on what you want to do. FB is more aimed at people who want to become a locksmith going over the basics of everything pertaining to locksmithing where LSS is more of a reference guide used by locksmiths. If your trying to gain more knowledge about locks then LSS would probably good for you if your trying to learn everything you can about locksmithing then FB would probably serve you better.

I do not have either but this is what it looks like to me.

Is that true ?
How come ?
Never heard of anything like that before! It don't sound right to me, you pay for the discs and should have them forever.

Meanwhile, I have the books, well worth it, although to be honest there is a lot of "filler" material in them, they could be reduced to one volume without leaving anything out.

It's largely down to the very spacious typeset! And lists, he has lists of lists, then he makes a list of that list, and just to be clear, he will make a list of the list. Then he repeats these lists, you will find the same list repeated about the book's.
If someone out there has a list fettish, this is the book for you :-)

There is a lot, and I mean a lot of "virtually useless" information that would be of interest only to hard core geeky type of people ( I'm guilty of that).
He devotes way too many pages on the exact properties of metal ( for example), way beyond that which is needed, I could read a book about paint drying, and I even got a little bored reading some of this stuff.
Worse, he repeats a lot of the text about the place.
Most of the "jucy" stuff is on this site, and elsewhere, I did not read anything that I did not know, or could not have found out with ease on the net.
In short, it's a very very padded out set of books, however for all that I found is bad about them, they are a nice set of books to have about the place. It's a one stop shop for lockpickers.
Buy them only if you are really committed to lockpicking and have a couple of hundred dollars laying about the place looking for a home!!!!

If your tight on cash, some exotic picks and locks may be a better bang for your buck.

Not to pass up on an opportunity to let someone know about my book: have you considered High Security Mechanical Locks? I'm not sure what you're after, but you may like to have a look at the table of contents and first chapter. You can get them from the link in my signature (click on the image).

Thanks for reminding me about your book greyman. I had seen it earlier and put it on my list of things to buy, just never got to it. Just need to save up a bit more money :)

I had the opportunity to glance at a copy in Sneek, and I got a VERY good impression.
Way to little time there, though, so I have to wait for my own copy to really enjoy it. Can't wait to.

I am quite angry at Elsevier, though, as they didn't bother to fulfill my pre-order I placed sometime around July and delivered to Schuyler instead... Lucky guy... :)

Cheers,
mh

amazon.com has it for $75 now, and amazon.ca has it for like $50. There is a thread on it now:
