If you are making the picks on your own or planning to buy them then the double ended pick might be the more economic choice because there are 2 picks for the same material/cost.

I myself prefer single ended picks for no particular reason but for the fact that i just like them... i just cant explain, its just basically personal preference so just make one of each and try them out and see which one you prefer.

my preference is single sided (peterson if you want the manufacturer)... why? because I prefer the feeling of a proper handle end, I also find that many dbl sided tend to be too thin (ala the southord dbl sided) or end up wonky and thick (ala the HPC)...

I vote single cos I want neat and nice looking picks that will fit in my neat and nice looking Peterson pick case.

I voted single sided.

1.) They look nicer.
2.) I'd be worried about bending the back end on a double sided with the back of my hand while picking.
3.) Probably a little harder to find a case that will keep a double sided from poking through.

keeping track

Postby raimundo » 20 Nov 2007 7:50

two picks on one handle makes changeing picks easy, and it also makes for less to keep count of. on the other hand, don't poke your eye out while picking  commercial double ended picks commonly don't have much handle, falles excepted, but locknewbie will make a nice set with whichever pick points you want on them. If your style includes shifting between two types of pick or two sized of hook, this will be easy to do with a two in one type.

I prefer single ended, because afterawhile, the position i hold the pick, my hand starts to digg into the other pick on the other end, so i prefer a smooth rounded handle :)

How many people change their pick while in the middle of picking a lock regularly? I only vary which pick I use rarely and would only change to another pick if I really couldn't get something open. I can see the merit in using a short hook for the low pins and a longer hook for the higher ones but currently I simply use the SO long hook (heavily sanded and maybe slightly shorter than at purchase) almost all of the time.

I generally don't like double ended picks. The only double ended picks I do like are a couple I got from LockNewbie 21.

I prefer single ended picks as the handle gives me a better grip. The double ended picks are difficult for me to hold and I lose some of my "feel while using them. I even add a foam handle for the picks I use most such as this one: http://www.lockpicks.com/pickhandlegripsleeves.aspx

Single ended, for sure. You don't really need to switch picks back and forth unless you rake and SPP simultaeneously... it's only a couple of seconds effort to change pick anyway, and I'd be worried about them getting bent in the case or against my hand while picking with the other end. It's not like they take up a lot of space, so two picks is definately better than one in my opinion.
