Postby josh0094 » 20 Nov 2007 21:07

i have a key to my front door and i want to have a copy made but on the back its stamped do not duplicate. thats how it is on all of our keys.

if i bring it to a locksmith shop will they make it anyway? tell me to go home? call the cops?

i could always clamshell it but i havent made a kit yet.

It depends on alot of things. It's not against the law unless it's a government key or something like that. Do you live in an apartment? What brand of lock are you trying to copy a key for?

I'm just going to throw this out there....

Do you think the guy at Home Depot will care to even look at the DO NOT DUPLICATE stamped on the back of the key? I'd just hand it to him text down and see what happens.

Failing that, I'd say "Yeah, it's my key. I put that on there so my staff don't get it duplicated."

Actually, I'd probably just go down into my basement and dupe the key myself, but that's just me talkin' :P

db

*this is, of course, assuming the key is not a protected keyway, which I'm pretty certain it's not, 'cause on protected keyways, they don't *need* to stamp "Do Not Duplicate".

I read about this problem in a locksmith book in which the author said he would ignore the "do not duplicate" stamp and cut a key anyway.
He said basically anyone can buy those stamps and stamp a key.
He said it isn't illegal to cut a key that says this and that he wouldn't turn the business away...He did however state that he'd get the key owner to sign a form for the key cutters own protection against legal action...

I guess the form would be name, address, phone number, signature etc etc...which if you were bothered could also be checked out.

if they ask any questions just tell them that the last place you got it cut you asked for the " do not duplicate" to be on it for security

A local customer of mine had a problem with my dnd keys getting made at the hardware store. He simply went to the store owner, showed him his monthly spending habits and politely asked him not to duplicate any more keys. That pretty much took care of it from that source. It's really just a deterent. Another idea might be to simply ask the landlord for another key. That happens all the time. As a locksmith, I recognize my keys that are on dnd neuter head blanks. I buy them for the dnd part, but also so I have room to stamp my key codes and sequential numbering if any.
Don't believe everything you think.

Some will say no. Many keys come DND stamped before it's cut

dont ask him to duplicate it, ask him to triplicate it so theres a little money in it for him. Also asking for multiples will establish that you own the lock. And give you a hideakey to bury in the backyard.

Good one rai, that sounds like the right thinking to me. But personally, i have never had problems getting DO NOT DUPLICATE keys copied, even at locksmiths for any reason.

I look at on a case by case basis. Recently I was called to the local bank to duplicate keys to their ATM machine. The key was clearly stamped DO NOTY DUPLICATE. They own the machine, I have known them for years and I made their copies. If someone I do not know or a teenager (i'm suspicious of all of them) came to me with a DND key I would look deeper into what it goes to and if they have the right to copy the key.

The lock on your front door is a Best interchangeable core cylinder? If so, that's highly unusual.

That looks like an "M" keyway.......

It's best to take it to someone who know's what they are doing......
